Hi guys
We are staying at HHI for 11 nights in April 2011 and would like to eat out some of the time...........we love our food, are travelling with a 10 year old (not too fussy) and love seafood, italian, french......actually pretty much anything, although hubby not keen on Mexican!

Would love to know your top 5 not to be missed restaurants!
Debx;)

1. Old Fort Pub
2. Captain Woody's (Palmetto Bay Marina)
3. Hudson's on the Docks
4. Red Fish
5. CQ's in Sea Pines

Those are our favorites. There are many more good ones!

Sunset Grill for any meal

Crazy Crab for fried shrimp, fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw and sweet tea lunch

La Famiglia for a large thin crust takeout sausage pizza - it's close to the resort.

Michael Anthony's for italian dinner - hope it's still good and open as we didn't go this fall

Coligny Bakery for baked goods

Red Fish - good wine selection

Casual food places we go - Sticky Fingers, Guieseppe's, Just Pasta, Seine's, Tide me over and Signals at the resort and beach house...

Our favorite by far is Dye's Gullah Fixin's. www.dyesgullahfixins.com

She is a one woman operation cooking down home low country southern food from scratch and fresh daily. Her fried chicken is some of the best I have ever eaten. Sides include collard greens, mac and cheese, candied sweet potatoes, butter beans and so many more. Her crab cakes are nothing but crab and as big as the palm of your hand. She serves corn bread that will melt in your mouth with home made sugar cane syrup that you will find yourself licking off your fingers. Her sweet tea??? Give me an IV drip it is so good.

Some meals are buffet, and some are menu meals. The website will tell you which is which.

Dye insists on reservations for all meals. The reason for this is she cooks based on how many people she is expecting for the day. The other reason? She is the only server, and wants time between guests to really care for and tend to them properly.

To make a reservation call the restaurant. Do not be put off if she does not answer, just leave a message and she will get it. She generally checks messages in between lunch and dinner and again after dinner.

Try it, I guarantee you will like it.

Add to the others a brand new resturaunt, Roastfish and Cornbread. When we were at HHI Thanksgiving week, Gordon in the Mercantile recommended it and boy, did he get it right! The resturaunt is run by the former chef at the Seashack. DH said it was one of the BEST meals he'd ever had-anywhere! I wasn't as enthusiastic, but it was very good. Add to that another vote for Captain Woody's. And Signe's is usually excellent (key lime pound cake, key lime bread pudding, stuffed french toast, etc.), but her blueberry muffins weren't very good. Hey-you can't always be perfect! We keep meaning to try Old Fort Pub, but something keeps standing in our way.
By the way, we're also going in April 2011, despite the fact that we just found out our vacation there coincides with the Heritage Classic. So when in April are you there? Maybe we'll see you there!

HH has a load of great places, you could have ten different top 5 lists and see minimal duplication. Here's a list of ones I might include in a top 5 listing depending on the meal type in question and my mood. We're not big wings people but I have to put Wild Wings as the one place I'd go if I only had one meal. Alligator grill would be my second meal partly because we like it that much and partly because you can get restaurant.com cert's for it. Sunset Grill would be my top choice for an occasion. Antonio's was one of the best Italian places we've ever been to. Skull Creek, Hudson's, Old Oyster Factory and Crazy crab are all close with OOF and Hudson's being more expensive than the other 2. The first 5 would be my top 5 today.

  • Sunset Grill
  • Alligator Grill, likely my best all around choice at present.
  • Skull Creek Boathouse
  • Wild Wings
  • Antonio's in wexford
  • Crazy Crab - the one as you come on the island.
  • Redfish, Alexander's, Old Oyster Factory (same company)
  • NY city Pizza
  • guisseppi's
  • Old Fort Pub for fancy
  • Hudson Seafood
  • Truffles
  • Signe's Bakery
  • Stack's Pancake
  • Original Pancake house
  • Saltry Dog

Personally I'd avoid Ocean Grill, Kingfisher's, CQ's, Little Venice, Island Bistro, and Steamers. We're ambivalent about Old Bamboo, Skillet's, Charlie's, Santa Fe, Aqua and the Main Street Cafe. A couple of the above options are new and we have no info about them. DVC members get a discount at some of these places and there are coupon's for various one's as well, esp OOF for a free salad. Many also have early bird's and while technically you're probably not supposed to be able to combine discounts, we've never been told no including at OOF (free salad plus 10% off, Alexander's with early bird plus 10% off)

check out the Restaurant.com choices but avoid little venice.

Try the Pink Flamingo for donuts. They are made when you order them. I had a Snickers one. It was to die for.

I'm not sure I have 5 favorites yet. We've taken only two trips there so far, but...

My DH and I ate at Chart House for our 20th anniversary, and it was wonderful!!!

We also like Guissepi's for a casual night.

I don't have a lot of experience with the primarily seafood restaurants since my DH is allergic to shellfish, so I can't help you in that area.

You will LOVE Hilton Head. It is such a beautiful place. Enjoy your trip!

;)Thank you so, so much for all your suggestions so far! We will be checking in on 8th April for 11 nights and can't wait!!!

Where would you suggest at Shelter Cove when we don't want to drive? Also, do any of the restuarants mentioned serve yummy cocktails!?!

I know you said your DH is not a fan of Mexican, but San Miguel's is a favorite of ours, and they have wonderful margaritas. We have not had good experiences at the Ocean Grille or Kingfisher. Scott's Fish Market is good, and there's also a deli at Shelter Cove.

I haven't eaten there but having seen so many endorsements, I'd also suggest San Miguel's. HH Dinner is close enough to walk out on the road near Shelter Cove, Fuddruckers and Guiseppi's are also close enough to walk. I've heard good things about Scott's Fish Market at the Marina as well. While I put Kingfisher's on my avoid list, it's more because I think there are better options, not that it's bad, plus it does have some very good early bird specials which go until 6 PM. Alexander's is also within walking distance though maybe half to 3/4 mild each way. Charlie's and Santa Fe are also just across the street and well within walking distance. You could swim to OOF, LOL.

1. A Lowcountry Backyard (new in Sept)
2. Sea Shack
3. Salty Dog
4. Hudson's

I highly recommend A Lowcountry Backyard. Great low country food and great people. I didn't get to do breakfast, but I hear it is great too. Scott's Fish Market had pretty good food but the service was only good if you were drinking.
