We're taking a trip to Virginia this June. From Florida it's about an 18 hour drive :scared1:

We have a portable DVD player which we will employ, but I'm looking for some new-to-us movies that the kids haven't seen yet. I started today by buying Ratatouille and Peter Pan (not the animated version...it was a new movie that came out a few years ago with actors- it got rave reviews).

What are some other great kid/family movies? It doesn't have to be Disney (gasp! I know...), but definitely something special. They can be old movies as long as they're not too scary (I love some older kids' movies but some are pretty intense).

Please keep in mind we'll have 2 grandparents who may have to sit and listen to them, too.

Thanks!

Do they have any favorite TV shows that you could get on DVD? My DS always loved the Disney DVD's that have the character cartoons. They have of course lots with different Mickey cartoons, Goofy, Donald, Chip and Dale, and Huey, Dewey and Louie. We also have Mickey's Three Muskateers. My kids also love the old Tom and Jerry and Warner Brother's cartoons. You could also try Sandlot, they are probably getting old enough for that. My kids also love the new versions of Cheaper by the Dozen and the Home Alone movies.

My girls don't really watch movies on the car DVD player, but the shows that they watch at home. They LOVE Max and Ruby, Spongebob, Doodlebops, Charlie & Lola and reciently Blues Clues. I do have some Disney movies as well (of course!) as well and Disney sing along dvds.

On our last long road trip my DD3.5 watched The Sound of Music. Suprisingly it worked out well because she only watched one movie the whole ride! :thumbsup2

I'm bringing the boxed set of the Muppet Show (the old ones :)) for our drive to WDW. The guest stars are dated, but they are still fun to watch.

...but my 5 yo DS loves the Modern Marvels: Walt Disney World video. It's a series done by the history channel. It's very neat, has some background info on Disneyland and WDW early years, construction, a few rides or things in each park. (For example, one from Epcot was about Illuminations, and one from the Studios was about Tower of Terror.) It's neat, because it's behind the scenes kind of stuff that you don't get from the vacation planning DVD. I don't know if all kids would like it--but my DS sure does!

Meet The Robinsons-Big hit with all of my kids
I agree with cheaper by the dozen and home alone
Brady Bunch Series-My kids adore
We do the same thing...videos for trips 1.30 or longer ;)

We had to do a trip to Kansas for a relative's funeral on short notice when the kids were barely 2 and the movie that we LOVED :lovestruc was Blue's Clues Biggest Show Ever-or some such title. It has a gold glittery cover. I loved it because everytime I thought it was over and the screaming would commence, another show started up. It seemed to last for 2 hours maybe?? We were at a point when attention span for that sort of thing was limited, it was later at night, the kids wouldn't sleep, and we just wanted quiet. It was very painful and Blue made it a tad better.

Whew. That was a bad memory lane to travel. :scared1:

If its the Peter Pan I'm thinkin of...I absolutely LOVE it!! "I do believe in fairies..I do...I do"

I could listen and watch Finding Nemo all the time....and Lilo & Stitch has a great soundtrack :)

or...non Disney (gasp) Wizard of Oz is a crowd pleaser :) Babe is cute...

If your kids like Spongebob, there are DVD's with multiple episodes.

Last night we rented "Honey I Shrunk the Kids", they had never seen it.

Incredibles
Hercules (really cute and not so popular)
Hunchback of Notre Dame
School House Rock
Little Rascals
Stuart Little
Cinderella/Cinderella II
Air Bud

Those are some of our kids favorites of the past and some current.

Two that worked well for us on our recent trip were Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. Both are long enough to pass the time.

Good Luck - I'm sure you'll have a great trip!

Mary Poppins! It is over 2 hours long and the first time my girls saw it was on a long car trip!

I don't know how old your kids are, but mine love Annie as well. I will second Sound Of Music as well :)

If its the Peter Pan I'm thinkin of...I absolutely LOVE it!! "I do believe in fairies..I do...I do"

Oh, good- it had great reviews on amazon, but I had never seen it nor knew anyone who had. I just love movies that take you somewhere different!

What about Herbie? I was thinking since you have boys they might like the racing.

Shaggy Dog, Nanny Mcphee, Evan Almighty, the Santa Clause series

All of these are at least 1.5 hours.

Is that movie "Hook" with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts? Here's a thought if you don't have many movies yet...try the Disney Movie Club. You can get a lot of videos ( up to 6 I think) very cheap. You still have a purchase commitment to make and those prices are higher than you'll pay for a sale, but it is a better deal overall, imo.
My ds loves the following for a long ride:
Brother Bear
Toy Story
Sleeping Beauty
Cars
Everyone's Hero (a baseball movie)
Happy Feet
Elmo videos
Tarzan

Have a great trip!

My kids Love watching the Full House series in the car! It is something they usually all agree to watch. OTherwise with the 3 of them it is ofte 2 against 1.:)

My DH bought the first season of the Brady Bunch on DVD for Christmas. I think that he bought it for himself, but my DD9 loves watching it. Not sure of the age of your kids, but these shows are very family friendly.

I think that you could find just about any older TV series. My DD also enjoys the Little House on the Prairie shows. My DH and I enjoy the nostalgia of these shows too.

I see you have boys. :goodvibes

How about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn? Loved that when I was little- I think it's by Disney, too! Also, I LOVE Hook (as another poster mentioned). Also, the Beethoven movies (with the dogs), The Parent Trap, maybe Disney Sing-a-Long videos? I LOVE those, too! One goes through the Magic Kingdom...it might be fun for your kids to get excited!

Have a fun trip!
