Looking for some ideas for a holiday later in the year - and thought some of you must have been to some nice European countries or cities lol

Thanks for any help ;)

jj......... ;)

We love Ireland. We went for our honeymoon and stayed in B&B's. Then we went again for our 5th anniversary and stayed in small hotels. We hope to go this fall with DD for our 10th anniversary. We really enjoy the slowed pace of life there and the countryside is just beautiful. It's easy to do an England/Ireland trip and it can be quite reasonable. I also have a brother who lives in Brussels and loves it there. It's an easy city to navigate and Paris is just 2 hours away by train.

Edited to add:

I just saw you like in Ireland so I guess a vacation there wouldn't interest you much :o . . Oh well, I guess it's nice to know someone thinks your country is beautiful.

I'm not sure what your last lol was all about....but since you are asking...

Rome

Barcelona

Provence (Aix and the surrounding area)

are among the areas of Europe I've enjoyed visiting

gina2000 the lol was just incase some of countries weren't up to much :)

Rome thats were i was thinking or Barcelona....i was in Madrid in June and loved it.

Thanks CEDmom i was thinking of some where different ( other than home ) :p

I absolutely love:

London (despite the dismal weather)
Florence
Provence area (gina2000's right about that)
Venice
San Sebastian, Spain

The major cities we have been to are :

Amsterdam
Copenhagen
Oslo
and sweeden we went to malmo, lund and the captial also
Amsterdam was nice. We liked the Riiks museum, van gogh museum and anne frank house.
Our favorite country was norway. We had a eurail pass and got around alot. We cruised the fjords and went to sjonefjord and gerangerfjord. We went to bergen, myrdal/flam etc. We found it to be the safest country with the nicest people.
Of course I guess that is why we always eat at Akershus at Epcot. Love those cloudberries.

Well, since this is a Disney board, I'll say go to Disneyland Paris. Low crowds. :)

I'd also say Ireland, but...

Venice and Florence are fantastic. My best friend is moving to Prague and she says the city is wonderful. (She's just not happy about moving.) Scotland is always a great place.

What do you like to do? DH and I love renaissance and medieval, so we always go a lot of places based on history.

We like museums -- old buildings - nice food and drink lol - general sightseeing

Not on the list so far and assuming there are no more terrorist attacks :

Istanbul!!

Absolutely beautiful city - with unbelievable sites. I've traveled the world over, and probably the best food I've ever had.

I've visited quite a few European countries and cities my favourite cities include Paris, Venice and Verona. My favourite countries have to be Austria, Italy (around the lakes) and Switzerland.
I also like Cordoba, Granada and Sevilla in Spain. There is some lovely scenary in the area and the palace are stunning.
For museums I love just visiting London.

We loved Salzburg, Austria! In case you are not familiar, most of "The Sound of Music" was filmed in this city and it is known for Mozarts birthplace! There is so much to do...museums, symphonys, Tours etc. Also, it is not far from a small town in Germany that performs the "Passion Play" during Christmas.

my favorite was edinburgh during the fringe festival. we were there for two weeks and it was great! it would be great even during the fringe fest, but that made it all the better. :) you can also go to other places close by via the train, like sterling.

i also like paris, and london, but definately NOT amsterdam.

amsterdam seemed really dirty and en masse they were very rude to us, a problem we didn't have in any other country we visited.

Paris
London
Istanbul
Florence
Madrid
Pretty much all of Tuscany

Actually I like everywhere I have been, but this is the top 6.

I've only been to Italy, but I loved Rome! I took my mom for her 50th bday in 2002 and we had a great time. Lots to see and do. We were nervous since we'd never been to Europe before so we aside from a day trip to Florence we stayed in Rome the entire time. Maybe next time we'll be more adventurous.

In Italy: Rome, Venice, Florence

In Switzerland: Lucerne

In Germany: Berlin, Heidelberg, Munich, actually I loved everywhere I went in Germany

It really depends on what you kind of vacation you are looking for. There are great art museums in Florence, the Vatican, and Berlin. The castle at Heidelberg is fun to tour. There is much to see and do in Rome and Venice. And Lucerne is just beautiful. Food was awesome in Italy and in Germany. I could live without most of the food in Switzerland except for the chocolate and cheeses.

I have enjoyed traveling across Ireland back in Aug. 2001 and an overnight in Brussels. I enjoyed the outskirts of Galway (mil/fil had rented a house for a month near Oughterard), Cliffs of Moher (I loved a pub in a nearby resort town), Clifden for shopping, Cong (I was there days after a star had gotten married), and the Connemara. I wished we spent extra time around Newgrange and the Boyne Valley. It was my first trip to visit FIL's cousins. My DH (NC Beast) has been to Ireland at least three times, but he always telling stories about the summer that he spent in Spain. DH's parents had several foreign students and still maintains e-mail contact with one in Madrid. BIL and SIL loved skiing in Austria last year. Brussels was a nice comsopolitian city---like NYC. We had a quick tour around Brussels before our flight home. I would have enjoyed sampling the mussels, chocolate, fries, and maybe some beer if we had more time and money. Belgium would be nice for a 4-7 day trip.

Please consider touring around the Republic of Ireland if you have not been to the various areas down there. I still have yet explore NC coast and its it is just several hours away. I hope for a trip overseas in the next couple of years. I wanted to spend at least a month this time in Ireland doing B&Bs and going to UK( maybe Wales and England).

Thanks for giving me an idea to plan my second trip overseas. It would be after a trip to WDW of course:). Have a fun time planning!

Now that's what I call a tough question. It's like asking what is the one ride to see and experience at WDW - it depends so much on what you yourself like. For travelling - are you into cities or nature, the mountains or the beach? The beaten track (which "everyone has done" - the Canary Islands and Kos for example - or undiscovered terrirory - now with the EU enlarging, how about Estonia, Hungary or Slovenia? Food, culture, scenery, histroy or people? Do you go for cheap digs with lots of socializing with the other people at the local pub, or are you more the George V and Ritz type of person?

It also depends on how and when you're planning on doing the trip, and for how long. I assume that by "later this year" you mean sometime in the summer.

There's been lots of good ideas thrown in, but I'd like to add a few. Estonia, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and especially Croatia have a lot of beautiful history, scenery and people. How about Tallinn, or Krakow, or Prague? Budapest or - one of my favourites - Dubrovnik? If it's frying on the beach you're in to, anywhere along the Croatian coast would be great. The Turkish coast also is wonderful. There's still a number of places in Spain, Italy (such as Sardinia) and Greece that are not overrun by the charter package crowd.

Something more rustic? Walking around central Spain, hiking the mountains in Norway or Austria, or norhern Portugal are fantastic.

Food? Gee, that's tough. But I'd rent a car and go just about anywhere in southern France, or Spain, or Italy - but away from the tourist coasts and the big-draw cities. (Although I'd try to get to stay in Venice overnight, when all the day-trippers have gone.)

I could go on and on - but space is running out, and I haven't even mentioned St Petersburg or Moscow, Copenhagen or Berlin ...
