I am going to admit that I did not read this thread all the way through. My favorite kids book is either One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish or The Lorax.

With that being said, have you thought about buying a recordable book? I have asked DD's grandparents to do them for us since we live so far away. I would like for her to at least know their voices.

My very favorite book of all time is "The Jolly Postman". It has little letters you can pull out of pockets that are from all the fairy tale characters.

Something I recommend to all new parents is Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. This is a literacy program in the US, Canada, and the UK started by Dolly Parton and supported by corporate sponsors. It's a free program that sends each child in the program 1 book a month from birth up to 5 years old. There are no financial requirements. This is a program for EVERYONE. It's only purpose is to promote reading.

While I would not recommend signing your friend up without her permission, I DO recommend finding out if it is available in your neighborhood and then passing the information along. Some of my daughter's favorite books came from this program. Spread the word.

I second any Mo Willems books.... Knuffle Bunny is one of our favorites... also the Pigeon books and Edwina the dinosaur.

Some others I haven't seen mentioned:

Eloise at the Plaza (my favorite from when I was a kid)
Lyle Crocodile books.... I never knew these as a kid, but my kids LOVE them.

I buy every new mom a copy of Love You Forever. I have one that I used to read to my belly. I didn't usually get all the way through it without tearing up, but it was so worth it. I had a copy of The Monster at the End of This Book as a kid and loved it. My boys have a copy and love it, too. We loved Goodnight Moon. We love the Clifford books, too. Oh, and the Dr. Seuss board books (my kids are little). I read them the regular Dr. Seuss sometimes, too, and they like those. The boys both also like the Curious George books. And Morris the Moose books. Oh, and my 6 y/o has a new favorite: Miss Nelson is Missing.
Did I mention that we have an entire library in our downstairs office?

Did you know there is a sequel? Another Monster at the End of This Book features Elmo and Grover together.

I don't know if these have been mentioned yet but when my kids were babies and toddlers they loved Pat the Bunny. Now as pre-schoolers they love The Monster at The End of This Book.
