we are staying at the cheynne at the beginning of august how do we get these fast passes and do we have to pay?

The FastPasses are for certain rides that typically have long waits to ride. You don't need to pay anything extra to get them - all you need is your park pass (one for each rider). Say you want to ride Space Mountain, but the wait is 60 minutes long. Nearby is a FastPass kiosk where you can insert your park pass, and it will spit out a FastPass for you with a time window indicated on it, such as 13:30-14:00. Instead of waiting in the long queue, you can enjoy some other ride (or lunch) and return to Space Mountain during your FastPass time window. You find the FastPass queue, which merges with the regular long one very close to the ride loading area. You end up waiting 5-15 minutes instead of 60 minutes or more. You won't be alowed to enter the FastPass queue before your time window, (and maybe not after).

(Edit: I should add that sometimes the FastPass kiosks run out by early afternoon, so it's best to get them early if you know you want to ride. But maybe not so much in September - I haven't visited that time of year).

I haven't been to use the one in the US, yet (maybe next year). In DLRP, I was able to hold fastpasses for different rides at the same time. I'm not sure if there was a waiting period that you had to wait first (like maybe you couldn't get the second one until an hour after the first one - I don't remember how long it was in between for me). Supposedly, you cannot get a second fastpass for the same ride until after your first fastpass expires. I never tried to get a second one for the same ride.

If I understand correctly at WDW, there is a two-hour waiting period after your first fastpass, during which you cannot get another fastpass for any ride - or until your first one expires, whichever comes first (does that sound right?).

It also sounded to me that at WDW people were generally allowed to use their fastpasses after it expired - even the next day in some cases (though there were exceptions to this). In DLRP I never tried to use one after the expiration time, but I got the impression that it was generally not allowed.

The rules for fastpasses changed in DLP in April and work the same way as WDW. You can only hold one at a time I am afraid :confused3

We just got back for DLP and we were able to use our fastpasses after the allotted time. I don't know if we were supposed to or not, one cast member did give us a strange look, but let us on anyway. I was just so used to WDW and Disneyland in Calif. that I never thought twice about not being able to use it after the time. And we were only able to get 1 fastpast at a time.

I did find that the fastpass queues were very short compared with our visit 5 years ago. The only ride we had trouble getting fastpass for was BTM and that was only one day when the queues for fastpass were huge and we decided not to wait.

You can collect another Fastpass after the start time has passed on your first...Does that make sense? What I mean is...You have a Fastpass for Space Mountain, which has a time slot of 1330-1400. At 1330 you can collect another Fastpass for any other ride (including SM). We found this the best way to make the most of our time at DLRP. Also, if there are four of you in your party, but only two want to ride, get 4 Fastpasses, then the two riders can ride twice, sraight after the first ride!!

Good suggestion about getting 4 passes even if only 2 riders are going to ride. However, I would suggest going on the first time as soon as you can. I found, since the DLP fast passes are only for half an hour, that by the time I got in line waited and rode Buzz Lightyear, the entire half hour was gone. If you get a CM who enforces the end time you might be out of luck.

It is quite correct that you now can only hold one fastpass until your time window comes up.
We found it quite tricky at times to make it work being used to the previous luxury of holding multiple passes.
Difficulty is you get a FP for say BTM and the time is much later on; say 21.00hrs. Then you go past Buzz and the wait time is 1 hour but the FP is 19.00hrs. Unfortunately as you hold FP's for BTM you can't get the early FP time :sad1:

That said it was interesting to see FPs being available so late in the day which probably makes it much fairer for most guests :)

Yes, quite right! Also, don't forget, if only two people are riding, send the others to get more FPs while you queue!!
