Hi,
Tomorrow is our day to book our 30 day FP for Magic Kingdom. We are traveling with my mother in law (who gets motion
sick very easily and who also has never been to Disney) and my husband and two daughters age 7 and 11. We booked this trip kind of last minute to take my mother in law who never goes on vacation, never been on a plane before, etc. We went to Disney last May with our girls and did the full park days every day. We are already calling this trip “Disney light” and telling our girls that we aren’t going to be able to do all that we did on our other trips because I don’t think my mother in law can keep up. All of that to say, we obviously are going during a very busy time...end of March. In booking FP, would you book FP for the few rides she can ride...small world, POC, etc. or do you think the standby lines would be ok for those rides and book the available space mountains, etc. and do standby for the other rides she can ride. I of course want it to be enjoyable for everyone. Thanks for your input!

That is so sweet that you are taking your mother in law for her first visit. As for Small World and POC specifically - those stand by lines are never that bad. So I would not FP those. I would FP 7DMT (if you can get it at 30 days) and SM since those have long waits. Not sure what other rides she would do but definitely FP the rides with the most waits. If she will do Peter Pans Flight then I would FP that - it always has such a huge wait. There are a lot she could do. I hope it all works out and enjoy!

DW doesn't ride all of the same rides than I do, but prefers to wait in line with me. You can simply indicate "non-rider" once you get to the front (of either standby or FP), but if you're in the FP line, she would have to have a FP for it to wait in the same lines you do. If your mother-in-law would rather wait in the shops, sitting outside, or what have you, then you don't need to get her one.

We've found you get more bang for your buck doing standby for the lines she'd be okay to ride, and doing the FP for the long-wait lines. If she's waiting during the Space Mountain type rides in standby (either in line or outside), that's a long wait, and probably not much fun for her.

Alternatively, if there's a FP ride that one or more of the members wouldn't necessarily want to ride, you could book a separate FP for any in that group to FP with your mother in law while the rest of you ride yours.

Hope that helps!

We took my MIL last year. We had a conversation about rides way before our FP window and she was ADAMANT that she and my FIL would not be doing thrill rides. Just going for the atmosphere. So I booked other attractions for her and my FIL. Well, guess who got to Animal Kingdom and decided Flight of Passage was something she wanted to do?

If I had to do it again, I would plan those hard to get fast passes for everyone. Then cancel day of and try refresh method for something else they want to do.

We just did a multi-generation trip that included my 60 year old parents and my 93 year old grandma , plus DD4 and DS7. We did FP for everyone. Some everyone decided to ride, others we all waited together and some didn't ride. Some we rider swapped since GG93 wouldn't ride. But I agree with the previous posters. Get FP for everyone because you never know if they'll decide they want to do a ride. I'd also say balance booking the long wait rides (SM, 7DMT, etc) with whatever you can get in the morning. That gives you more opportunity to get those 4th, 5th, 6th FP later in the day and minimize the number of rides you're waiting standby for. Especially if you've already set the expectation with your kids that you won't be doing EVERYTHING. It may be more enjoyable for all to be able to fastpass 6 or 7 rides, standby a couple of the shorter lines and miss a headliner or two as opposed to tying up your fastpass options with a 7pm 7dmt.
