Fashion faux pas or just one persons opinion?

My first race was the Tower of Terror 13k in 2008, which I thought there was no way I'd ever finish. I wore the tech shirt because I didn't know any better, and I loved it, and I finished (almost dead last, but no "disney magic" involved!)

So now I'm superstitious that unless I absolutely hate the tech shirt, or it doesn't fit right, or something like that, I wear it for the race - it's gotten me through every race so far so I can't change the pattern! Plus DH and I get pictures taken *before* the race (we always look horrible during/after) and it's cute when we're all matchy matchy!

I won't buy the I Did It shirts, though. I wish they were for sale at the finish line, but they're almost always sold out by then. Maybe if I do Donald (which would be my first half) I will allow DH to buy it for me without telling me and present it to me at the end, but I'm not even sure about that.

When I was an *extreme* newbie and started running last January, I read an online running article that said a sign of a newbie is running the race in the race shirt given in the goody bag. So okay, lesson 1, don't wear my race shirt in the race! :) However, because it took several races before I finally got a race shirt that fit properly, I wouldn't have worn them anyway! (Exception being the Royal Family 5K t-shirt I got last March. It fit but the weather was too cold on race day to wear that T-shirt!)

I just ran the Halloween 5K last weekend. Cute race shirt, and since I didn't have a costume or other Halloween-type clothing to capture the spirit of the race, I ALMOST ran the race in the bright orange race T-shirt that came in my goody bag. However, since I am a little further along and not an extreme newbie anymore, I didn't wear the shirt because I thought the cotton t-shrit would be too hot! :) So I wore my technical t-shirt and changed into the bright orange shirt to wear later in the day. :)

I think it can sort of be seen as a "spot the newbie" thing, but at the same time it would mean one less thing to pack if you knew it was going to be a tek shirt.

I ended up wearing my race shirt in the last (and first) half-marathon I did, the Min-E in Indianapolis. That was because they were long-sleeved, and while the night before I'd gone out in a sundress and been comfortable, race morning was 30 degrees. There were a TON of people wearing their shirts, I think because most people weren't prepared for the cold snap. I did, however, put my tank top over it, because even though it looked sort of gooberish, I at least stood out, and it was one more lair to keep me warm.

I'm another "can't wear it till you run it" person.

What I hate is twice I've signed up early for a Rock N Roll event and have been given a really cute t-shirt as a bonus...that I have to hang onto for months!! Right now I have a Vegas Rock N Roll tee that I got in June, that I can't wear until December! :rotfl:

Great photo!

I am in the camp of not wearing it until I earned it. But, I could care less what others do. If you want to wear it, by all means go for it. Looks good.

enjoy,
Duane

I know a lot of people wore the shirt from the race I did last weekend because it was so cold and windy they were adding extra layers. I'd left mine at home, so I just ran in my singlet - I was fine once I started. It was that or run in a sweatshirt hoodie. I opted for being slightly chillier.

well if it is a fashion faux pas there are a whole lot of other people in the same boat as you! I have always seen plenty of current shirts worn during a race. Much prefer seeing that than red speedo guy!

Usually wearing a race shirt during the race is fashion faux as it shows that you are green(newbie) runner. Many people do wear them and you can tell who hasn't done that race(or distance before). Not judging anyone but an observation after doing over 80 marathon/ultramarathon (plus races I have RD'd).

Here's one more reason why you shouldn't plan to wear the race shirt. The 10 for Texas race today gave out really nice long-sleeve Saucony tech shirts. Perfect for running in January, not so good for Houston in October. By the end of the race, the people wearing them were almost all beet red in the face and looking quite overheated.

You would have that they would have given out the "I'm training for the" t- shirt as a bonus. Then more people would wear them and advertise for the event.
