Who are the characters dressed all in black and pushing some kind of machine that walk along between the floats during the 'evil' part of the parade? Sorry if I'm just showing my ignorance, but even if they aren't identifiable characters, I haven't got a clue what they're supposed to represent (other than darkness and the underworld?)

I don't think they are identifiable characters. But see them as hencemen accompanying one of the "evil" characters.
Once the transformation stage commences you will see them dance in "evil" delight :maleficen

We wondered who these strange characters were too, never saw them doing any dancing, evil or otherwise though :dance3:

When we saw the parade on Sunday night, they removed their cloaks when the floats stopped to reveal neon 'octopus' design constumes and danced. Can't help on what they were pushing though; we wondered also!

Where were you standing on the parade route when you saw them change their costume and dance (planning ahead for December 08  )?

Ooh im intrigued now! :)

We were stood near the Adventureland entrance (I think it is Adventureland and not Frontierland, the land with an entrance in front of the castle on the left as you face the castle) with the castle to our left, up on the grassy (muddy at the minute!) bank.

When the parade stopped on the island in front of the castle they did the dancing.
:)

The machines they are pushing are UV lights - when they stop to dance, the lights make the costumes (that are hidden under the black robes) glow.

This makes waaaaay more sense now! We saw the parade from the right side of the castle, near the beginning of the parade (from the little theater, actually). Next time, we will try for a different spot to see all the evil action. It was nice seeing the parade early and heading off to ride a couple more rides before the park closed, though!

Yes, some Villains push black light floodlights. This black light makes their costumes glow in the dark when they do the evil show stop.

Fantillusion Parade features 3 show stops:
The first is where the first floats have a white lightshow and Chip, Dale, Goofy and Pluto come out of one floatand have a dance.

The second is the evil one. The Villains steal the light and transform. E.g. Maleficent transforms into a dragon, Jafar into a snake and so on. This show stop also includes the dancers with the black light.

Finally, in the third stop, the Princesses and Princes win over the Villains and have a dance in the light. In my opinion this is a very touching moment.

Unfortunately, the parade does not do each stop at each point of the parade route. As a rule of thumb, usually the best spot to see them all is Central Plaza in front of the castle. But the exact positions of the stops vary.

When there are bad weather conditions like rain or a strong wind, the parade will not do any stops for technical reasons.

Signs that the parade will not do any stops are:
Open curtains at the float of Chip, Dale, Goofy and Pluto so that you can see the characters while the float is moving.
The dancers in the evil part do not wear black robes so that you can see their costumes whiles the floats are moving, or they do not push black boxes.

Sorry for my bad english! I hope this explanations are handy to you.
