We have booked a Dinner package for Dec 06. After reading on these boards we are thinking of changing the restaurant. We are currently booked in for the Mamma Melrose restaurant but have not read too many good reports (mainly on the american sites ). Do you think it would be too late to alter this at short notice? Has anybody eaten here recently? If so what were your experiences of this restaurant and can you suggest another option?

We (6 adults, 2 kids) ate at Mama Melrose as part of our Fantasmic DP in August and enjoyed our meal here. The flatbread starters were delicious and my kids (v difficult to please) raved about their main course which I think was chicken parmigiana. Desserts were good too plus they do a fantastic jug of Sangria... When we previously did the DP, we ate at The Brown Derby - that was fab and would definitely eat here again but TBH I preferred the atmosphere at Mama Melrose. We've never eaten at Hollywood and Vine...

not had experiance of mm's but i have done H&V and i wasnt overly impressed :confused3
i would stick with your original choice :thumbsup2

I agree with Nat, stick with your origincal choice, we did not enjoy Hollywood and Vine too much either. Saying that we also enjoyed the Brown Derby very much ...

We like Mama Melrose and I never quite understand the bad reviews. It's certainly as good as some others which people rave about. For us, though, it's only ever a 'fast food' alternative. If you've got this pencilled in as one of the special dining experiences for your trip, I suppose it's possible you could be disappointed.

We ate there a couple of weeks ago. I had the Grilled Chicken Flatbread (with Sun-dried Tomato Pesto, Pancetta and Asiago Cheese). It was well-made with quality ingredients, but too dry. Matt's Pepperoni Flatbread was much nicer, even though it sounds really boring. I was desperately trying to see some food being brought out before ordering, but we were there shortly after they opened for lunch, so I didn't have any luck, even though our server brought our starters before taking the order for our entrees.

Matt had the Calamari to start which was surprisingly good - I always avoid that type of thing in all but the best seafood places. I was expecting it to be chewy, but it was tender and perfectly cooked. It would have been more than enough for us both. I'd asked about the soup of the day which our server thought was a seasonal pumpkin something or other (it sounded delicious), so I ordered that. She'd made a mistake and came back to say it was a ground beef chilli and 'very good'. I hastily agreed to have that, but wished I hadn't. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but it was a huge bowl - almost a meal in itself - and I knew I wouldn't enjoy my pizza if I ate too much of it. I'm not too keen on chilli soup - if I'm going to have chilli I want it to be a proper chilli, not a watered-down version.

Did the package twice this year, Hollywood Brown Derby in August and mama Melrose in October. My vote goes to Mama Melrose.
Service - very good and attentive
Atmosphere- loved it. Cosy, friendly, not pretentious in any way, lovely fairy lights and dark tones.
Food - brilliant. Salad and flatbreads were very yummy, i had the chicken pasta which I loved, my grandfather had the veal which he said was quite good but my granmother does better (which is still a good review as my grandmother is an outstanding cook). The cocktails were yummy too. Only sticking point was new kids menu which is limited but were able to substitute, but the portion was tiny, so they may need a snack later.

Much better value than Brown Derby and friendlier too. I'd stick with your booking. :thumbsup2

Thanks for your replies. We have decided to stay with our original booking.
