We like Mama Melrose and I never quite understand the bad reviews. It's certainly as good as some others which people rave about. For us, though, it's only ever a 'fast food' alternative. If you've got this pencilled in as one of the special dining experiences for your trip, I suppose it's possible you could be disappointed.
We ate there a couple of weeks ago. I had the Grilled Chicken Flatbread (with Sun-dried Tomato Pesto, Pancetta and Asiago Cheese). It was well-made with quality ingredients, but too dry. Matt's Pepperoni Flatbread was much nicer, even though it sounds really boring. I was desperately trying to see some food being brought out before ordering, but we were there shortly after they opened for lunch, so I didn't have any luck, even though our server brought our starters before taking the order for our entrees.
Matt had the Calamari to start which was surprisingly good - I always avoid that type of thing in all but the best seafood places. I was expecting it to be chewy, but it was tender and perfectly cooked. It would have been more than enough for us both. I'd asked about the soup of the day which our server thought was a seasonal pumpkin something or other (it sounded delicious), so I ordered that. She'd made a mistake and came back to say it was a ground beef chilli and 'very good'. I hastily agreed to have that, but wished I hadn't. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but it was a huge bowl - almost a meal in itself - and I knew I wouldn't enjoy my pizza if I ate too much of it. I'm not too keen on chilli soup - if I'm going to have chilli I want it to be a proper chilli, not a watered-down version.
