Both have been picked up for a full season, good news!
All I'll say about The Event is that "FlashForward also got picked up for a full season, last year."
Persons Unknown, Crusoe, Kings, Knight Rider, The Listener, Bionic Woman, Journeyman, Surface - all shows favored by fans of genre television - all shows killed within or just after their first season.
Fox, ABC and NBC are all the same in this regard.

Knight Rider was really only a year???? Seemed a lot longer when I was a kid

The Event has only middling ratings. Some of the shows I listed did better in their time-slots than The Event is doing. It is getting soundly beaten by DWTS and Two and a Half Men. People shouldn't be happy about how few viewers The Event has. That leads to people being unhappy when their misunderstanding of the situation ends up with the surprise of the show being canceled. But why are you bringing up shows that had basically no viewer?
The Event is expensive as compared to the other NBC programs. Yes, NBC's other drama programming is doing poorly, but that doesn't mean an expensive show like the Event is immune from cancellation. The Event is one of NBC's highest rated shows right and NBC needs viewers, their programming is terrible.

I'm not. I simply am warning against unbridled optimism, and provided balance to guard against that.
Actually, the reason to be concerned is that most network executives are brilliant, and responsible, both of which are bad news for us viewers, sometimes. Most network executives realize that what's enjoyable to some viewers may still be a bad financial investment, and they couldn't care less that viewers "should" be watching - if they're not watching, and there is a better investment for the money being spent on that programming, then they're quick to redirect that investment.
You should be a comedian. No, I'm not very funny. I'm much too factual and rational to make up jokes. And I don't brook with silliness from others very well, so it would be very ugly when there are hecklers.
