We have a family trip planned from May 28- June 3. I understand this is during Gay Days. I have read posts concerning this week. Homosexuality doesn't bother me in the least, but I don't want our 7 and 9 year old exposed to any overt exhibits of sexuality be it hetero or homosexual. I would appreciate any comments or opinions from anybody who has visted during this week before.
Thanks

I have visited the parks at Gay Days and the only place where I saw any type of this behavior was at Downtown Disney.

If this is a problem for you, I suggest that you check the Gay Days web site and do not visit the parks on the same day attendees are scheduled to visit.

but I don't want our 7 and 9 year old exposed to any overt exhibits of sexuality be it hetero or homosexual.

This is pretty much impossible these days. Don't your kids ever watch tv?

If homosexuality doesn't bother you, then it probably doesn't matter when you visit. I've visited with DD a few times and have seen hetero teens and adults so allovereachother that it was just inappropriate in a family setting - not often, but it does happen. If you're willing to deal with that possibility on a non-GayDays visit, then you should be fine any week you choose to go. :sunny:

Enjoy your trip! :wave2:

Whatever your family's beliefs are and whatever you are concerned about, it is not our place to judge. You need to do what you feel is right for you and your family. Some friends went last year during Gay Days and she too just planned to avoid the park they were scheduled to attend. She said it was a non event for them and she would have never known. We have attended during GDs and the biggest problem is not necessarity what you'll "see", it's just crowded, especially MK on that Saturday.

what are you talking about. It's gay days all the time at Disney. Especialy in the Entertainment department. Trust me... i knoooooow.

I was there once during gay days, and besides the matching shirts pronouncing "a day of magic, a night of pleasure" the only place I noticed them was in the parking lot, one of them had a flowered hat and was prancing around while his friends yelled, "look, she's found herself!"

We've only once seen anything that made me try and get the kids looking in another direction. It was during one of the Gay Days in 2001 at MK - two guys getting really physical in line at Tomorrowland Speedway.

I wouldn't appreciate anyone (straight or gay) going to the PDA extreme in a place loaded with little kids, but that's where you just need to be as alert as possible. If a young child asks about something they see, it can be very difficult to find the appropriate words to explain things.

You don't want to condemn anyone for being affectionate, but there is a time and place for everything. Disney might not be the right place for anyone, straight or gay, to be getting their groove on in public.

Oh, that is just SO wrong!!

There is no reason that two adults should ever stand in line to ride that ride. It's totally not worth it! What a waste of their time! Didn't they do any research before they left???? Read any guidebooks or websites? Sad. Just really sad. :sad2:

I know, we tried to tell them, but they were way too involved at the moment. I don't think they cared what ride they were getting on. At least it wasn't Goofy's Barnstormer! :confused3

We've been twice during this time and we saw nothing that would be considered out of the ordinary. I saw some behavior from some teens that I thought was in bad taste, but they weren't there for Gaydays :rolleyes1 ...

Hey, I LOVE Goofy's Barnstormer! Is that so wrong?

I do understand exactly where you are coming from. I was in WDW during Gay Days weekend this past year and I can tell you, if I did not notice much, your kids will not.

I really think you should go and not think about it. I did not make it a point to look for "gay people" and though I noticed three guys in their red shirts at every attraction we visited in AK, there was nothing that would have drawn my attention. Although, one of them had on a shirt that said "fruitcake" and another guy was wearing a shirt that said "delicious!" :lmao: It was actually funny and we told them their shirts were comical and they thanked us for being kind where some were offended. We made conversation - it was nice.

I will have to say - I was quite turned off by the two girls kissing so loudly while waiting for Honey I Shrunk the Audience that I thought I would get sick. It sounded like they were dogs with peanut butter or taffy stuck in their teeth. I actually looked right at them and told them to get a room. However, this could have been a male and female and I would have done the same.

Just go - don't worry about it - your kids will be fine. I have seen worse from straight people.

For the person who said "don't your kids watch TV" - my child is limited on what she can watch and therefore is not exposed to such behavior on television. There are others who have the same guidelines for their children.

My sister and her husband took my 2 nephews ages 6 and 4 to Disneyland a few months ago during "Rainbow Day". :rainbow: They had no idea what day it was. Let me just say that my brother in-law is not a fan of Disneyland at all but he will do anything for his kids. The official color of the shirts for Gay Day was red and Guess what color my sister brought sweatshirts for the whole family-RED!!! She laughed when she figured out the connection but her hubby really never did. She said that at the time he just commented that there were alot of people wearing red shirts that day and something must be going on. She didn't want to tell him but she finally did tell him at home a few days later and he just shook his head and smiled. :teeth:

Gay Day has now become almost a week long event, so I would check out their websites and avoid the parks that they are going to on any given day. Also, last year there were two different websites run by two different groups with a different daily itinerary, so try to find them both. Not so much because you'll see anything objectionable, but because the parks will probably be crowded on those days.

I must tell you, we went last year during gay days and all we saw were people in red shirts having good clean fun. Pleasure Island is were it gets rowdy.

They only time I ever saw a truly inapproprite PDA I've seen at WDW was in the line for POTC during Night of Joy! Two wholesome church group kids with raging hormones making out againsts the wall in corner of the dark queue! I hope there pastor didn't see them :rotfl2:

Since you aren't likely to visit Pleasure Island with your children, you should be just fine in the parks. But the 'Rainbow Day' thing gave me an idea. Maybe if you see something (horrors!) you don't want your children to see, just tell them it's Rainbow Day and 'let's all look up and see if we can find a rainbow!' Then steer them away from the 'offending sight'.

I've been to Disney every year while Gay Pride Week is going on and I can guarantee you'll see things you're worried will be inappropraite for your children. But you'll see it from the teens who apparently can't tell the difference between a theme park and a hotel room. It even makes me cringe, and I'm nobody's idea of a prude.

Even without the PDA's, you're going to see WAY more flesh than your might have bargained for, which could be startling to those who don't watch television. ;)

Other than that, go during Gay Pride Week and have fun! If you don't make a big deal about it your kids probably won't even know anyone else is there but you, them, and Mickey. Kids have a way of not worrying about things their Moms and Dads stress over. ;)

I was there last year during Gay Days and other than some people dressed a little outlandishly at the MK one day it wasn't a really big deal.

DD and I were there last year at the same time you are going. The only thing I saw that was objectionable were some t-shirts with some very explicit words on them. Of course, I see a lot of t-shirts I wonder about! DD 14, was impressed by some of the makeup jobs she saw! :hippie:

I see more teens and young couples with inappropriate displays of affection...mostly in queues. However, you will be at WDW....will your kids even notice anything else but the rides, characters, and sights???? We're WDW veterans and unless it is right in our face, we still find ourselves seeing new sights (not guest related) when just walking from attraction to attraction.
