Being Family of the Day is pretty amazing. My family was chosen for our carribean cruise 11/ 2015. As we all sat together waiting to board, a DCL member approached my son (13yrs at the time) and asked him who he was traveling with, where was he from, etc. Then she came over to me and asked if it would be ok if they chose our family. What....are you kidding me! Heck yes it's ok! My daughter and I even got a little misty, lol! Several people recognized during our sail that we were FOTD and would say "heeey you guys were the FOTD, so cool!" So yes, to the previous explanations of what it is.
BUT...not sure if this was part of the perks or if we were on Disney's nice list, because for the rest of our cruise we had our own concierge that made us feel so important and special. Everyday we were surprised with goodies to eat, souvenirs, etc. He over heard my son say he was addicted to popcorn and suddenly bags and bags of popcorn arrived. We received a nice note from our host each day. In the first note it said he chose us to be his family and he would be available for us at any moment for any request or need we may have. Over the 8 days we got to know him and found out he was engaged to be married and would be disembarking with us to catch a flight to Thailand. Anyway my husband gave him a very nice bonus/wedding gift, but we really just wanted to thank him. So it could be connected to FOTD during boarding or not, I really don't know. But I do know that we were very very very thankful for this very special experience.
