Families of 4 (2 small kids) how do you sit on airplanes?

haven't needed strollers in a long time, but I used to always take an umbrella on board and the attendants would hang them in a closet for me. Maybe that isn't available anymore ???

Almost never. This practice was almost completely stopped years ago because FC passengers complained about the possibility of the wheels dirtying their suit jackets. Also, if the plane has no FC, such as on any discount carrier, then there are no closets. You *might* get an FA to agree to do it on a widebody 2-aisle aircraft, but it would be very unusual.

Since 9/11, the long wait times before flights have left many frequent travellers pathologically averse to checking luggage, as that just makes the time in the airport even longer. For that reason, onboard storage space is now very scarce, and airlines are being much more draconian about enforcing gate-checking for things like strollers.

We're a family of 7 now, but I have always checked www.seatguru.com to check the configuration of the plane and try to get us seat assignments all together somehow.

We are 5 and we did all the girls in a row and us in thte row beside them. I had a dvd that they watched and gum for the ears. worked well both times for them. They are 7 1/4, just turned 5 then, and 2 1/2 and it was their first time flying. We had a direct flight and less then 2 hours each way.
