If he gave money to his sister to go to another country to buy jewelry, is it possible that his sister said "they have good deal on these love bracelets (although I've never heard of these before), do you want me to pick one up for your significant other?" He may have said sure and didn't know anything about. It's quite possible that he doesn't know that it's fake but only bought it based on his sister's suggestion.

My wife's engagement/wedding ring was custom made with a 3 carat stone that was handed down through the family. It is valued in the tens of thousands. She regularly wears a 50$ USD ring from amazon as she doesn't want the original to get lost or stolen. We tend to discuss any jewellery purchase extensively and since she has cheap stuff as well as stuff from Tiffany and Cartier, it's no big deal. Communication about it is key.
