Facebook - Cleaning House

My DIS friends, the ones I have met in person have become so very, very important to me.. I didn't know that three or four days together could make such a difference but it has and I wish I could hang with them all the time.

:grouphug:

I actually don't even use my real name on Facebook. My "real friends" know who I am but no need to make myself anymore google search-able than I already am.

Same thing here, I like to know the disboard name in order to add someone.

I'm excited to finally being able to meet a few of my DIS/facebook friends when I'm at WDW starting next week!! I'm really looking forward to it!!

And I've also gotten some strange requests recently- what appear to be commercial facebook sites... Or rather sort of advertising...

I too have been getting lots of non-Diser FB requests lately. I have been amazed at how many DISer's accept them as friends blindly just from their request and the number of friends in common. After a few issues early on - I began to ask what their DIS name is, if they didn't provide it. I have always included my DIS name with my request to other DISers - as they wouldn't know me otherwise.

I have my Privacy settings set to the most restrictive settings on everything. However, I do allow Friends of Friends to view photos of group activities, so that if I tag you in a picture your friends can share in what you been up to.

All accepted friend requests come with a "trial period" if you post Offensive posts, Fair Warning - I will delete you.

I am also selective about people I went to High School with and people from work and other aspects of my life. There was an incident here locally, where someone posted they were going to a concert and someone they knew 20 years ago in High School broke into their house while they were gone as they got the info from the post on Facebook where they were friends.

by the way, on facebook my first name is Bat-Sheva, not Beth (which i use here to make life easier for people :goodvibes )

my 'real' first name, and the one most people out in the real world know me by, is Bat-Sheva... (the name i had to grow up with in suburban detroit - not easy....you can't imagine how much i wished i was just debbie or linda or sue....or whatever...)....

Wow! That is a scary abuse of Facebook.

Some people collect Facebook friends so they can advance in the games connected to Facebook. I do not participate in that sort of friend collecting, but some of my friends do. I just can't imagine "friending" a person just to add more land to your Farmville!

I laughed when I saw this thread, because about two weeks ago, I cut my friends list from 700 to 350....and still trimming it. I added most everyone who requested and seemed to be a disney fan in some way, but my home page was so flooded I finally had enough.

I love having lots of Disney friends on FB though, because no one I know in real life (besides my kids) are Disney fans :scared1:

Many people probably know how to do this but I recently found how you can look at how your profile looks to others. Mine looks quite a bit different from when I just hit profile. It might help some people in deciding what to put on Facebook. I hate how so many of these things are hidden inside multiple menus.

Click "Account" in upper right of the screen
Select "Account Settings" from the drop down
Select the word next to Privacy Settings - mine says "manage"
At the top of the screen you will see a paragraph that starts with "Basic Directory Information". Click on the end of the paragraph "View settings"
In the upper right hand corner click on "Preview My Profile"
You will see how your profile looks to most people. If you want to see how your profile looks to some individual in your profile list start typing their name and pick from the list.

This helped me a lot in deciding what to include and remove from my page.

While we are talking about privacy on FB thought I would share this tidbit.. There was a 30 minute discussion about this on a Buzz Out Loud podcast (CNET) just this week.

You know those LIKE buttons that are showing up all over the internet? If you click on one of those while you are also signed into FB you are opening up your computer and FB account for all kinds of virus and malware attacks. These virus and Malware programs are then sending out notices to all your friends on the friends pages saying that Joe Smith LIKE so and so and then if that friend clicks on the like link they get the malware and virus on their computer and FB account. It is a vicious circle so PLEASE before you click on those like buttons make sure it is a reputable and REAL site (such as the DIS, many of the bad sites are replicating legitimate sites to trick you). I personally won’t click on the like buttons that others suggest anymore. I will only click on a few and I have to have brought myself to the site personally.

I literally just cleaned house two times in the past week. I found that I have more DISers on my list than friends I've known almost all my life. Haha. I have also double checked that I cannot be searchd due to my profession because everyone knows everyone in my field. The last thing I need is requests from old clients.
