Fabric dying question

I want to make stripes on a piece of fabric I have. Is it possible to put a strong strip of tape down on the fabric to make stripes and then brush on the dye in between? I don't need to have crisp lines (I figure some of the dye might bleed under the tape a bit). I'm just not sure how to go about this. I have never dyed anything before. I'll be dying a top and a pair of leggings. Thanks!
 
IME, using masking tape will accomplish this, but like you're expecting, there may be some slight bleeding of the dyes. Be sure to fold up lots of newspaper in between the layers so the dye doesn't go through to the opposite side of the piece you're working on. Good luck!
