I need to take my daughter in for an eye exam and get her two pairs of glasses. One for everyday (classroom etc) and a pair of sports glasses for playing tennis.

This is the first time I have had to do this without insurance coverage. There are so many different offers out there I am perplexed about which place to go to. I do want a quality doctor but at the same time we are on a budet. Is it better to get the eye exam at the doctor and then order online. :confused3Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

I wouldn't order glasses online - you want a professional to fit them to her face when they come in. The doctor's office will probably give you a discount on her glasses since you don't have insurance (mine offers 25% off). Probably your best bet is to call around to different places & see what kind of pricing they can offer you.

Also, see if your medical insurance will cover an exam by an opthamologist as a "specialist" under your plan. If so you could take your daughter to an opthamologist for the exam & then get her glasses at whichever place will give you the best pricing. Good luck!

i found the best price for Sports glasses was Walmart - i brought my sons script their - got him the goggle type for $75.00

Lenscrafters is usually the most expensive place to get glasses. Even with a discount. The best doctors, sorry to say are the local optometrists. Consumer Reports did a survey years ago & found this to be true. Don't flame me, I'm sure some have had good experiences with chain optometrists, but overall they have a higher redo rate on glasses. That's also one of the reason to get your glasses & exam in the same place. If there is a mistake made, it is easily fixed, usually at no additonal cost to you.

Lenscrafters made my son's glasses wrong last year. He kept complaining about his vision being blurry. I started to take him back to the doctor but I took his glasses back to Lenscrafters and they admitted their mistake and remade his lenses at no charge so they do stand behind their products. My son is legally blind (20/600 and 20/800) so he has to have his glasses.

Watch out for Eyemart...They advertise 2 for $74.00, we ended up paying $145 and the glasses were horrible. They broke every other week (free repairs but still a pain). Her evelashes hit the glasses and they said that's how it will be with any glasses. The scratch protection is charged separately as is every other feature, the frames weren't nice either so we ended up with one pair that were never worn anyway. She opted for contacts so our insurance paid for those and so we had no coverage for glasses so I thought I would go cheap...mistake.

My son and I go to opticare for the eye exam. We really like the doctor. We looked every where for frames for him and he actually found a pair at walmart and the price was only $120 for the lens and frame.

I have had problems with lenscrafters also with them giving me the wrong prescription. The only good thing about them is if you don't like them you can take them back after 30 days and get full refund. The best thing is to go around to the different places, lenscrafters, walmart, sears, opticare, pearl vision, etc and see if she finds frames that she likes. If you have AAA, ask the place is they give a discount because lenscrafters and pearl vision do give you a discount with AAA.

Purchase your back up pairs at zennioptical online - I heard about them thru clarkhoward website.

I got my glasses from zennioptical. No problems! But, I don't wear them all day every day, I only wear them in the evenings after I take out my contacts.

Personally I would go to a local optometrist to get the Rx and the every day glasses and then check to see if zenni can do a sport pair.

If you have a Costco membership I would go through them for the eye exam. A "glasses only" eye exam at my Costco cost $55.

I would then take the script and purchase the glasses through zennioptical.com ; The prices can't be beat and everyone in my family who has ordered from them has been very happy with the end product.

I do not care to over spend-however in the case of my childs glasses I have found that "you get what you pay for" as my father said. I have have bad experiences with inadequate providers and prefer to be insured that she receives the best possible. In my experience the WalMart services in this area are inadequate.

My DD has needed glasses since 1 yr. she goes to an MD for her exams and once she got out of baby size glasses, I got her latest pair at Walmart (she loves them cause she picked them) We didn't have insurance. Most places offer a 12 mos insurance for a small fee (hers were $10) so if they break, they will be replaced. We've gotten than every time, and have used it every time.
