Extra driver charge - Dollar, National, Alamo

I currently have a ressie with Dollar but noticed that they charge $8 per day for an extra driver. My DH will be the main driver but there have been times when I run to town or need to take a child to the clinic so both of us really need to be drivers.

We are Emerald Club members and usually go with National but the rates are so bad this year. Do they still allow a free second driver at National?

I think Alamo charges as well, don't they?

For Alamo, if you use the Walmart code which anyone can use (430710) you get a 20% discount PLUS a free additional driver. Hope this helps!

In our experience, rental car companies don't count a spouse as an "extra" driver. We've both had to show our driver's licenses, but we were never charged the "extra driver" fee.

If you're insured by USAA you can allow any other USAA insured driver to operate your rental car. (Check exceptions & rules.) But it makes it nice since all of our vacationers seem to be with USAA and it makes the entire auto rental part much easier. We use Hertz again with USAA's discount.

Log onto the USAA website and click on Shopping and Discounts and follow the Hertz link from there. You get the USAA discount automatically entered as well.
