Extra Charges?

We are saving for our Europe trip and looking at what ABD covers and what we are responsible for. What is a realistic figure to count on for tips, dining and souvenirs? Would $1500 be enough or would we need more/less? We don't want to get over there and get surprised with a bunch of extra charges that we weren't expecting.

Thanks for any input anyone can provide.

Can you give us a bit more info? For example:

What particular trip were you thinking of? London is more expensive than Prague. Also, some of the tours include more meals than others.

How many of you are there?

Would you be buying leather bags in Florence or refrigerator magnets in Vienna? :)

Do you like good wine with dinner, or is bottled water more your style?

I didn't find that I spent much on either trip (Viva Italia, Imperial Cities), although my husband begs to differ. And as much as I like my wine, I'm a fridge magnet kinda person. ;)

I concur, Dotti. A few other points:

- It also depends on how much free time you might have on a particular tour. The more free time you have, the more extra $$$ you might spend.

- Some tours have more meals included than others, so there's an expense there somewhere.

- the ABD tours, themselves, have no extra charges built in. That is, when you pay for the tour - that's it.

From my own experience on the London/Paris tour, I don't think we spent anywhere close $1500 outside of the tour. To be honest, I never added it up. ;) We're not big on buying souvenirs, for example - so we spent very little on shopping. We do like wine with dinner on occasion, but we probably did not consume any more than 2 bottles all week. Many of the meals were included. The few meals that were on our dime were very nice, but not particularly expensive for our family of 4. As for free-time, there was not a ton of it on our tour, and what little we had was spent strolling in Hyde Park, riding the subway, strolling through Montmarte, touring the British Museum - all pretty low-cost endeavours.

Hope this helps in some small way!

Hi Dotti,

Do you remember who your ABD guides were? Was Dusty one of them?

Allen,

I had Cinzia and Tina on Viva Italia and Tina (again!) and Annet on Imperial Cities. I was hoping for Tina again this year, but she's doing just Italy. I already told her we're all requesting her next year. :)

Thanks Dotti. I know how you feel about getting the same favorite guide(s) on future Adventures. We had several guides on previous tours that we would LOVE to see again...
