I only have 1 key to my Jeep. It was in the shop once for computer/electrical issues & they asked for both keys since they would need to be reprogrammed. I can't recall if I ever got back both keys, but that was at least 6 months ago so obviously they wouldn't remember. I have also moved since then, so maybe it got misplaced in the move :confused3 I've been looking for weeks.

Anyways, now I'm really paranoid that I'm going to loose my only key!! I called the dealer & they will have to special order another one & it would run me about $300 :scared1:

Anyone know of anywhere else I can check? Do I have to go through the dealer? It does have the remote entry....no car starter though.

I'm afraid that's the cost. The keys now have a microchip in them programmed to your car and your car cannot be started without it. You'll have to pay that if you want a key that will start your car. Wish I was more productive help.

That's OK. I just needed someone to confirm that's what it's really gonna cost me :scared1: Sometimes I feel like the dealer is taking me to the cleaners, just because they can :confused3

Obviously, it's alot less than what it will cost if I misplace my only key.

Wow, I've heard they can be pricey, but that sounds high for a Jeep key. We lost the one to our Honda and had to have that replaced and I know that it was less than $100. Can you call around to some other dealers?

My BF bought a used VW and it only had one key, he obviously doesn't like that he only has one. He asked how much it would be to get a copy, and IIRC it was $250.

How likely is it that you'd lose your only key? At $300 I think I'd take the chance that I'd never lose that key. Good luck:)

You could look here.

They came up doing a search. :)
This may save the OP a few bucks on the key blank, but she would still have to pay the dealer to program it since she doesn't currently have two working keys.

I really wish there was a better solution since I only have one key for my Grand Cherokee.

Holy Cow! Ouch!

When I got my minvan it only came with one and I went to the dealer and it only cost $120 for the special key. If i got the vallet key without the remote thing it would have been $59

Well, I don't think I'd totally lose my only key but maybe lock myself out once every few years.

AAA might be cheaper. Also, a spre remote would save you there. I think that I 'only' paid about $70 to get my remotes programmed. I found them for sale for cheap on ebay.

I would also recommend calling another dealer to find out how much they charge to program either the remote or the key.

It should also be noted that not all keys need to be programmed. My Cadillac has a chip, but it's not unique to the car. They have a number of variations, but once you know the one you need, you just order that key that you need and get it 'cut' wherever you want.

We had to get a replacement for Marie's Hyundai about 2 years ago, I seem to recall about $125. Gone are the days when we could go to the local hardware store and get a half dozen made for about 3 or 4 bucks.

I'm not sure what Jeep keys are like, but I had to get a new fob for my Chevy. The dealership wanted over a $100 for one. I found a fob on Ebay and instructions on how to program it yourself online. Worked like a charm and cost me roughly $13.00.

ETA: The dealership had made an extra copy of the key itself for a reasonable amount, under $20.

When my son bought his used car, he only received one key and one fob. I purchased a second fob, and two more keys off of E-bay. IIRC, it cost about $30 to have the dealer cut the two keys and then to have the keys and fob programmed to the car. I can't remember how much I paid for the fob and the blank keys.

I decided to get two extra keys, since you have to have two keys in order to program additional keys to the car. Now, if he loses a key, I can just buy one more key, have it cut where ever, and then program it to the car myself.

There are a few sellers on E-bay who sell a set of two uncut keys at reasonable prices.

My key is my remote and I think they told us it would cost several hundred dollars to replace them. I have 2, luckily and guard them with my life.

When I had my Buick, Dh ran over his key with the lawn mower and I think he paid about $100 to have it replaced, it has a funny looking metal objet protruding from the plastic and if you put any other key in the ignition, the engine would shut down, so we had to replace it.

We just bought a new Milan, and we purchased an additional key. We had 2 choices, one was just a key...for around $25, the other was the whole remote/key combo for around $75.

We purchased the "just the key" for $25.

Maybe your jeep has a cheaper version of the key, maybe without all the bells and whistles.

Ugh, is this thread timely! In May I lost one of our car keys in the craziness of putting the baby and stroller in the car and hightailing it out of there after watching the space shuttle launch. DH called two local dealers last week (the car is a Toyota SUV with the key and lock switch combined) and was quoted $250. from both places. Seems really high to me. I said we should wait until we actually lose the second key (hopefully never!!!). But thanks to this thread I have some new things to try....
