We are working on a truly fun home project, painting the exterior. We had it done in 2000, the paint started peeling like crazy, we think because the job was done during a heat wave in August. DH has been sanding when he has time, and I am in charge of deciding on the color.

Background: we own a one story Acadian, on a heavily wooded lot. The house is a combination wood and brick house, maybe 75-80% brick, with wood facing in the front of a large wrap around porch with a very wide overhang, posts and railings, and facing around the back door and patio. We painted it white with dark green for the shutters and the doors.

Due to high humidity and pollen, etc. from all the trees, the facing especially becomes mildewed each year and has to be washed. My husband has suggested we use a neutral but darker color than white for the facing, overhang, etc. We have lots of Acadian style homes in our subdivision, even on our street. By far the majority of them are painted white, both the overhang and the facing. A few have something darker for the facing but a light coordinating color for the overhang, posts, railing.

I like the idea of the darker color camoflouging the dirt/pollen/mildew between pressure washings. However, I don't want to be the odd man out in terms of how people decorate this style of house. I am also thinking it would be easier to get a better result by just going with the existing white since we are doing this our self (I should say he is). We are using Benjamin Moore paint. If we do go with color I have found a light taupe I like for the overhand, posts, and railings, a darker version of taupe for the facing., and we will probably do dark green again for the shutters, green for 3 of the doors, maybe bright red for the front door. DH is willing to change colors if I want, in fact I am the hesitant one. I guess after all this work he is putting in with sanding he wants the best possible result. I tend to take the easy way out. BTW, this is the first time he is doing an exterior paint job in many years and that overhang is high, wide and long.

What do you think?

We painted this summer. Took 150 hours!!

We also have mildew problems...there is a paint additive that helps a lot.
We have dark color....and it shows just as much, if not more on that.....so go with what you like.
