My husband and I are throwing up the idea of tent camping at the world the idea does not bother me at all.. love to camp just wondering for all you tent campers how do you protect yourself when it rains heavy and can you recommend any ideas and ways to do this ...:)

have not tent camped in many years, but to answer your question, depends on what time of year you camp, does not rain much November thru May so it should not be a real problem. Now if you are going to tent camp from late May thru late Sept. all I can say is ARE YOU NUTS? If you don't get wet with rain than it will be sweat, unless your tent has A/C don't do it

My family and I have done extended tent camping trip many times. We have a 10x18 cabin tent.We first spread a heavy duty tarp on the ground then set the tent up on it.We have a tarp that is 16x28 (approx) that we stretch over the tent and extend on either side the front and back.We also have a 12x12 popup canopy that we set up right in front of the door and pull the tarp up on it.that way we can walk in to the tent without getting wet.The popup also serves as our kitchen and we have clear side panels we can put up it the weather warrants it.In the kitchen we have a free standing 2 burner propane stove, microwave, toaster oven, small chest freezer and a small refrigerator. We also have 2 large storage boxes that all the kitchen gear is stored in that we use for food storage when we are camping.Inside the tent we have 2 bunk cots for the kids and a queen size air mattress/cot.All the clothes are packed in plastic tubs(1 for each person) and slide easily under the beds. All in all its a good set up and we have been using this for many years and have never been wet.We keep ever thing tight so water doesn't collect in sags.I have pictures of the setup but have recently moved and all my pictures are packed.I hope this helps and if you have any questions I will try to answer them.Happy camping!!!

I tent camped at Disney for approximately 14 - 16 nights for about 5 years in a row. These were all December trips. Fortunately, we didn't have a whole lot of rain, but there was some.

Yep, waterproofing and setting up correctly will be your biggest factor in keeping dry. Seam the seals, spray the tent fabric liberally with some of the "Camp Dry" style sprays, and stake down every corner and every guy line provided. Keep things nice and tight. I have never had the need to use a tarp over my tent.

I also agree with a shelter of some sort at the entrance to your tent so that you can shuck shoes and rain gear in the dry before entering and exiting your tent. You can also sit under your shelter in the rain and are not "stuck" in your tent.

For groundcloth I do the followig. I start with the extremely thin painters plastic and lay that down first. (The painters plastic is just disposed at the end of the trip.) Then I lay down a 6 mil plastic groundcloth cut to fit the tent exactly. I also have another piece of 6 mil plastic cut to fit inside the tent.

I use an air mattress, plastic bins and plastic drawers to organize stuff inside my tent. I have a couple of the clips to hang rain gear from the inside of my shelter. I have a plastic bin for shoes sitting right outside my tent.

Now I remember YOU are the one that gave me the idea for the painters plastic and it was genius!! :worship: I used it during my October trip and I cant imagine camping with out it. I do not like to clean tarps and stuff at the end of the trip, all I had to do was sweep the tarps and tent off and we were done. The dirt get's almost muddy from the condensation under the tent.. painters plastic is a must! Unless you dont mind spending hours scraping stuff off your equipment..

Not sure when you're going but we had 2 tents behind our camper a couple of times, on the pad in the 100 loop and also in the 2000 loop. We had a 12 X 20 screen house over the two and it stopped 95% of the rain in June. Nothing got wet as we also had the tarps etc mentioned above.

where did you get a 12x20 screen room?? I've been searching all over for one of those.. all I can find is those big white garage type ones, and the reviews are bad.. I'm trying to cover a 12 x 19 tent

I would never camp for 13 nights at FW. It is unlucky. Either add a night or subtract one. I am not superstitious, but I don't believe in taking chances. I once bought a roll of mints at Walmart just because my purchase came to $6.66.

Hmm God Bless all of you who camp for 14+ nights. I wish I could do it! I once camped (not in Disney, maybe that would make it more awesome) but in Utah with dirt, mud, water, no bathrooms, etc. I was ready to go after 3 days!!

ps. I will add anything to not make my total $6.66!!!

Don't get Al and me started about places we've "camped" in dirt, mud, water and no bathrooms.

We found it about 3 years ago at Sears. Don't know if they are still around or not.

I had a good laugh when the people on that cruise ship that was dead in the water were getting off and the media was interviewing them. One lady was complaining it was horrible and disgusting and another guy said he was in the military and it was like high end camping...lol
