Hi Goofster!! I assume you have AA miles. You need to call AAdvadvantage customer service and tell them you want to participate in the "re-engagement" program. There are three levels depending how many miles you lost:

Level 1 = 0-50,000
Level 2 = 50,000 - 100,000
Level 3 = 100,000-200,000

To get your level 1 miles back you need to do 2 things:

1) Sign up for their email notifications (piece of cake)
2) Apply for and receive an AA / Citi Card and charge a minimum of $750

To get level 2 miles you need to do level 1 and ONE of the following:

a) Earn 5000 miles from at least three AA partners

or

b) buy 1 round trip ticket of at least 750 miles on AA

To get level 3 miles you need to do the same as level 2 except you need to earn 10,000 miles from the partners or fly 2 round trips on AA.

You have 1 year to get it back from the day you call and sign up for the "re-engagmenent" challenge. Once you complete the challenge, you call them back to tell them you completed the challenge and then your miles are re-ativated. I am in Level 2 so, it will take some time to get all my miles back but I am already on my way and I will easily complete it within 1 year.

Let me know if you need additional information.

** FINAL UPDATE **

I just wanted to give everyone a final update. I just completed the final step of the American Airlines re-engagement program completing a round trip flight to beautiful Minneapolis, MN. I checked my AA.com account and sure enough, ALL of my lost miles have been re-credited back to my account. Just goes to show that it IS possible to find some pixie dust here on the transportation board.

To OP who is going to have SWA RR credits expire next month.......check the SWA website for partners. Also, I believe SWA may offer extra credits if you open up a SW credit card......don't know if that promo is ongoing. I think they may charge $59 per year for their card....not sure. But, it may be worth the $59 to you to earn that extra credit NOW and then maybe you can use it for your trip in May.....or better yet, plan another trip to use your free flight!!! After all, $59 for a rd trp flight.........good deal, I think.......

Just found out my Americaln Airline miles expired. I thought I had more time but I guess I have been busy. It is over 75,000 miles which is equivelant to 3 tickets. I am very upset and it just doesn't seem right that all those miles I earned being a loyal American Airlines customer can just disappear. Has this happened to anyone...? Do I have any recourse???

EDIT **For the happy ending, go to post #53 on page 4**

2ND EDIT **Final Results - post #66 on Page 5**

75,000 miles = 3 tickets. Just a heads up - it can be very difficult to get a 25,000 mile ticket, especially to popular destinations like Orlando and especially with popular flight times. Frequently you have to bump up to the 50,000 level. I haven't used AA but found this with USAirways and I think most are the same these days. With SW in June, I had to travel the day before my hotel reservation unless I wanted an evening flight into MCO.

It may be difficult to find 25K mile flights, but AA does offer the flexibility of allowing one way rewards - 12,500 for a one way ticket. I was able to get a really good fare going to MCO and then used 12,500 miles for the return.
