I'm interetsted in trading with timeshares outside DVC (Interval) for the Carribian (sp). Does anyone have tips or experiences they can share? I've had a request into membership for 2 months for anything at pardise island but have not heard a word. Can I expect to wait months or years whenever I want to trade outside DVC?

We have traded to the Newport Beach Marriott in Ca and the HH Marriott. We had no problem with the trades but did them several months in advance. I would think the Paradise one would be problem unless you want it way in advance. At least from what I hear on these boards, Paradise Island is very popular. I have many people say their trades went well and most had little problem. It just has to be in advance and flexible.

We traded into Hawaii last year, and got our request iin just 5 days. It also only cost us 160 points for a week on the Big Island in a one bedroom.

Since the only resort I'm aware of that's currently on the II-DVC list is Harborside, I don't think you'll have much luck. As it happens, that resort is closed for several months for repairs. It would be a very difficult trade, even off time (weeks 17-50 = spring to fall). With it being closed, that will concentrate demand from both members and exchangers. Since Harborside is a Starwood property, I suspect most trades go through that direction anyway.

You may want to look at Cancun, Aruba, St. Marteen, PR, Cayman's and the like. Remember that in order to get anything, a member at the other resort must give it to II first. Just like at DVC, this doesn't happen a lot at high demand resorts for peak times of the year. Besides, most trades using DVC will be a downtrade anyway.

I had some II searches in with MS but gave up after a few months; I'll admit I was being picky, though. As Dean said, just about every other timeshare is a trade down.

I'd recommend joining the Timeshare Users Group (tug2.net) to check out timeshare reviews. I believe you can browse the TUG classified ads for free. You may find a good trade there - when trading for a resort you feel is below DVC standards you could negotiate a DVC studio for a 1BR or 5 nights at DVC for a week at their timeshare. Through an ad on TUG, I traded a week in a BVW studio for a week at Four Seasons Aviara in a studio - I definitely got a good deal!

Remember that with a private trade a lot of trust is involved and there's always a chance you could get burned. Good luck.
