Experience with GI illness on board

On day 1 PM of our cruise I started to feel a little queasy. I take a medicine that causes stomach upset and GI symptoms so I didn't think too much of it at first. I have also had a little seasickness in the past. The next day I wasn't feeling great but meds controlled my symptoms and so we went on an excursion. A couple hours in it became apparent that this was not caused by my medicine and I was feeling so poorly we decided to leave the excursion and we took a cab back to the ship from 45 minutes away from the port ($$$). Back in the cabin I had a nap and hoped it would pass. It did not so I stayed in our portion of the suite (we had upgraded to a 2 bedroom at the port, thank goodness!) and isolated myself from my kids and husband. That evening things got much worse and I was now actively super ill (extreme GI symptoms). I called the medical folks and they asked me to come down.

The medical care was terrific. I was seen by a nurse who did a full check and also a covid test. I was given three different medications and confined to my cabin, and given the good vomit bags that make it so much neater than the alternatives. There was discussion of sending me to another cabin alone, but with the 2 bedroom suite I was able to be alone in the main bedroom with just be using the bathroom. I was told I was quarantined in my cabin until I had been symptom-free of D and V for 24 hours. I happily complied because I was just so, so sick. Later that afternoon I was in a lot of gut pain and the Doctor came to the suite to ensure it was not something more serious. Again, a full check, and a refill on meds. I was given a medicine for stomach cramps, Imodium, and also Zofran. I was told if I didn't stop V I would be given an IV. Luckily, things sorted themselves out after about a day or so. I was in quarantine for about 44 hours in total. A second covid test was also negative.

Once I felt a bit better I was given chicken broth, jello and beverages from Room Service (who were not allowed to enter the room). They were so lovely. Every time I called for ice chips, or broth the lovely lady Octavia sounded so genuinely concerned and sweet, and was so happy when she heard me sound brighter.

I had a final check-in just before my isolate ended and that was that. Cost of treatment: $0

I feel that I had food poisoning. I believe it was from food prior to boarding. I believe it was liverwurst at the hotel breakfast buffet, or creamed spinach at dinner. I'll never know for sure, but the illness was shorter than viral illnesses I've had in the past, and none of the other 6 of us in the cabin got ill. I had to fill out a CDC form. THat was really hard with the extreme symptoms I had at the time but I understood the need and rationale.

The care and concern were excellent. The access to appropriate treatment and medications were excellent.

So sorry you got sick. Luckily you got better and didn’t have to quarantine longer. Our son tested positive for Covid on our July cruise. Everyone was beyond excellent while he was sick and we quarantined. They were also excellent leaving the ship and afterwards.

It's definitely possible you had food poisoning, but it also could have just as likely been Noro. That pretty much sounds like their Norovirus protocol. It's still out there, we just don't talk about it as much what with Covid being the main thing one picks up on cruise ships these days. Ah, the good old days where we only had to worry about a 24 hour bout of vomiting.

I jest, obviously, that sounds absolutely horrible and miserable. I'm so sorry that happened but I'm glad you recovered pretty quickly and nobody else was ill.

Your experience was almost exactly like mine on my Wonder cruise in April. I think I had food poisoning but from food on the ship since it started very soon after eating lunch at Cabanas. I also ended up quarantined in my cabin for about 44 hours and was well taken care of in the medical center. Room service wasn’t great other than giving me crackers. I wish I had known I could get jello!

I am thankful my family didn’t get sick, but it really stunk to lose 2 days of a 5 day cruise.

I’ve had Noro a couple times on cruises. For me it takes about 24 to 36 hours to run through my system. It’s never occurred to me to see the doctor although maybe I should have. . Ive just stayed in bed and close to bathroom. Have my husband bring ginger ale.

How can that be? Did they bill your insurance? I thought medical visits are a charge. Although
I do remember my daughter being bit by something on the island and they gave her some creams.
No charge.

I'm sorry you got sick (that doesn't sound like fun), but I'm glad to hear you got great medical attention. Sounds like they handled it well. Thanks for the report and I'm glad you are feeling better.

Sounds like you had it pretty mildly if you were able to tolerate ginger ale. A couple times - wow! Poor you!

They said that there were a few medical conditions that they treat without charge and GI illness is one of them? I guess because it could be something endemic to the ship and therefore not just bad luck? I don't know. I was prepared to pay, but the bill came and it was zero.

I was told the same thing—no charge for this type of illness as they want people to seek help and not avoid it because of possible cost. Also they want to know in case there is an outbreak of noro or food poisoning (plus they want you to quarantine in your cabin until 24 hours after last symptom).

I was going to tough it out at first but I was in so much pain and so miserable I couldn’t walk (they had to send a wheelchair for me) and I was hoping they could give me something to help (which they did thank goodness!)

I'm glad they gave you some Zofran. It is a lifesaver. Literally. It saved my life. I would have died and/or lost my baby if I hadn't taken it during my pregnancy. I now carry a bottle with me every time I travel in case anyone comes down with a stomach thing.

10 years ago my DD16 was given alcohol by the servers and ended up very drunk on NYE. (definitely she is at fault but I had hoped they wouldn't serve her - no checking ID on NYE - just champagne flowing for whomever grabs it from the trays. Just an FYI to other parents of teens). She had a bag of saline via IV and it cost us a bit more than $1000. Insurance reimbursed us but we had to pay prior to disembarkation.
