Hi Gang,

We purchased a Casio Exilim Card camera for our upcoming disney cruise next month. I was wondering... if we will be taking pictures during the indoor shows and/or at night outside for general night time photos or fireworks/outdoor night shows, what is the best settings to pick on the camera to make these type of photos look best? Sorry very new at this for sure!

If you're able to post process say in photoshop, then just the quickest shutter speed is the best option for dark shots. You can usually achieve this with high ISO settings and whatever white balance makes the photo look the darkest. However, if the image on your camera looks really bright and noisy in the dark, it will probably come out blurry -_-

Thanks for the info! I dont plan to process the pics in photoshop or a similar program but I will mess with the ISO settings before we leave and try some night time and indoor shots to see how they come out.

For night time scenic shots, for starters, use the night mode if provided, or use exposure compensation minus two.

Exposure compensation (a minus amount) is used at night so an automatic camera does not try to make a night scene look like day. Exposure compensation (a minus amount) can also be used to speed up the shutter and avoid a blurry picture, at the expense of making the entire picture darker than it should be.

Keep zoom to a minimum, since more zoom means a smaller available lens aperture which in turn needs a slower shutter.

If you still get the red indicator for "shutter too slow, use tripod", or you get a blurry picture due to shaky hands anyway, then you can increase the ISO at the expense of making the picture more grainy aka noisy.

Keep in mind that fireworks shots are unlike most night shots. The fireworks are relatively bright and you want the shutter to stay open for a while to capture the trails. Here is a thread that numerous people put together with good fireworks shooting advice.
