Exhanging Aussie dollar to USD

I usually take a travel MasterCard when we go to the USA - has anyone ever taken Aussie cash and exchanged it on the ground in the US? Is it a viable option or does it cost more?

naaa - not done it and wouldn't bother - cause you have to go find a bank or an exchange window - the exchange booths usually charge the higher fees.

you'll find several threads on here about travel cards which are among the lowest cost way to go.
