Where is the best place to do this? I kick myself for not changing a large sum of money over when the dollar was at par because we travel so much into the States but now it's up again and I'm not sure my bank is the best place to exchange it (I use Royal Bank)

Depending on where you live and if one is close by I always find that our local global currency gives me the best rates - they also give travellers cheques free of charge. www.global-currency.on.ca

When the dollar was at par last year, we decided to open a US account (we're at Canada Trust). Every week, I'd "slide" $25 Cdn into the account from my computer. Whether the dollar is up or down, I'd make the transfer. I just got tired of playing the guessing game with the rate.

Once we booked WDW, I started to get a bit more serious about saving $$$ into the account. The only draw back is I cannot withdraw from that account using my debit card in the States eg get US money in the US. That does not make me happy at all. But maybe that'll change one day.

I too set up a US Dollar account at my bank (Scotia Bank), and transfer money into it online. Before we leave, we'll have those funds turned into AMEX travellers chq's. I think we get those for no fee because of the VALUE chequing account we have.
