My best friend who now lives in Japan, along with her husband is coming over to visit next week. I wanted to have them over for dinner, so we are either thinking of having a bbq, or just cooking a variety of different things.

So, if you were in my position, what would you make?

Any recipes, are also welcome.

Well if someone was visiting that I haven't seen in a real long time, the last thing I want to do is spend the day cooking.

So a bbq is a good idea or check out food network for recipes that can be made ahead of time and then reheat.

Do they have any favorite dishes or types of food that they aren't able to get in Japan? Something like a bbq could be exactly what they're wanting the most!

I agree. My SIL that lives in Chicago always has certain restaurants that she hits when she comes to town. They have TexMex up there but it's not the same as here.

It sounds like you are going to have a great time spending with your friends that you have not seen for awhile. A simpe BBQ sauce that we use is to put some ketchup in a small bowl (around a 1/2 cup, but this is not an exact recipe). Then add some brown sugar to it and mix. Add a small amt of vinegar and adjust to taste. It makes a sweet BBQ sauce that's great on ribs and chicken. Have a great day everyone!

Thank you for the ideas everyone. Oops when I mean BBQ, our type of BBQing is grilling. My husband said that I can make whatever I choose, but he wouldn't mind grilling. My friend does enjoy my shrimp casserole dish, so I am planning on making that. And I am thinking of inviting our other friend, and her daughter as well. In Japan, they don't really have a Thanksgiving meal...so the last time they visited, I had put together a fresh roasted turkey, with all of the trimmings, and they both enjoyed it.

How much do bagels sell for in your area? What type is your favorite, and what do you like to top it with?

The last time I got a bagel with cream chesse (and they use half the container ) it was $2.10.

My favorite bagel is a poppyseed with plain cream cheese. I also like pumpernickle (sp?) bagels, egg bagels, and onion bagels.

Bagels cost about 80 cents each. I save a bit by buying day old bagels that sell 6 for $2.50. I get these when they have a bag of my favorites. I prefer either poppy seed, pumpernickel, or sesame seed.

I like lox and bagel, cream cheese (regular or veggie) tomato and capers. That's my favorite breakfast sandwich, but I will also eat it for lunch.

DH likes onion bagels with plain cream cheese. In a pinch, he'll eat one of my varieties, just heat it up from the freezer.

Every country, city, and maybe even town has their own unique food or dish that other places do not have, or something that had originated from their area. So, what about where you live? What foods/dish are popular in your city, state, country....?

Pennsvlyania Dutch cooking. But you don't want to be on a diet and eat this food, as the diet goes out the window quickly.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, and ate a lot of ethnic foods, but I don't know that any are truly Pittsburgh. Maybe the Primanti's sandwich (?) which includes your choice of meats and then coleslaw and fries on Italian bread. yummm.. And Isalay's Chipped Ham is the one thing I have my parents bring me when they visit.

Here in Lancaster, I would say Shoo Fly Pie and maybe Fastnachts, since next Tues is Fastnacht Day. They're pretty much glazed or powdered sugar donuts without the holes or filling. I've never seen pretzel rolls anywhere else, either. Picture a soft pretzel (no big holes, tho!) instead of a bun for a sandwich.

Hmmm, I'm not sure, a couple of bucks for a package of six maybe. I don't buy bagels often, maybe once or twice a year and that's for Carol. And I don't buy them separately when we are out. When I do eat them at home, I'm fine with a little melted margarine on top after I've toasted it.

Golly, I don't know about the city I live in but TexMex would be the food for the state.

Hmmm...I live in the largest Chinatown in North America, and both Richmonds and Vancouver's Chinese food was touted recently as better than what you can get in China. So it would be Chinese food and Sushi. Didn't realize how spoiled we were until we travelled last year. Couldn't wait to come home and have some "good" Chinese food.

So, my husband had gone to the eye doctors, and his needs to have a procedure done. We need to fly to the other island-where I do not drive at. Then we have to stay over since the doctor needs to see him for a pre-op the following day....I am sooooo stresssing over this, and it makes me nervous at the same time. I don't think these feelings will end until he recovers. Especially having to leave my kids with my parents overnight while we are away. My daughter is the only one that has been away from me when I had my son, but she will be okay now. It is my son, that I worry about .

I honestly don't remember. Probably our last big storm whenever that was.

Sorry to hear your DH needs a procedure done. I would be stressing about that as well!

The last time I was worried was last week when I had surgery. Thankfully, I was in and out of the hospital in one day, and no complications.

The last time I was worried was a few weeks ago when my wife had to deal with a very stressful family interaction. Never fun.
