Excellent (if I do say!) AKL/AKV photos including Wanyama Safari, Aug. 2008

Beautiful photos and great report.

Just curious, does anyone remember "I WANT A CLARK BAR"? Or am I dating myself?

Yes, they are awesome pics! Thanks for sharing! We're getting ever closer (47 days today) to our next trip and first to AKV - yay! The excitement is just swelling...

Those are great photos. I really envy you being charged the concierge rate. I paid the full $210, without wine too! Don't you just love it when the curious giraffes come up to the truck?

Why no wine? Just preference I hope! To be honest, I didn't even notice until I later that 'hey, 320 is only 160x2. Neat'

WOW! Those are the best photos I have seen re: animals at AKL. May I ask, what camera/lens were you using?

Wow, that is high praise! Thanks! These photos were taken with a Nikon Coolpix 3100, which is an automatic 3.2 megapixel digital camera. Nothing too fancy! It does have a variety of helpful modes, such as sunset and action, the latter being especially good for animal photos.

Great pictures, now you have me wanting to do this safari. I know nothing about it. What is the cost and how is it booked? What is included? Can DVC members book it?

The Wanyama Safari happens on something like 4 days a week for roughly 3-3.5 hours from 4 - 7ish pm. Includes a tour around the AKL savannas, a traditional mid-safari break for juice/nuts/meats, and a full course meal at Jiko with wine. Anyone staying at AKL/AKV can book it - cost is/was $210 per person for non-concierge guests and $160 for concierge guests, but we were charged $160 as savanna-view DVC guests, so perhaps that's changed.

It is expensive- this was to celebrate a special occasion. Plus we were going to eat at Jiko anyway :)

What gorgeous pictures, thank you! I'll be at AKV in about 10 days with a DGF!

Based on your photos, it looks like you have kids. There is also a minimum age of 8 for the Wanyama/Sunset Safari. There is reduced price for kids younger than 10, I think it's about half the adult price. For ages 10+, they pay the adult price of $160/$210 per person.

Looks like the Wanyama Safari is well worth it. I thought when we were there last month that the regular safari tour was pretty good, with a lot more "access" to the animals than our previous trip, but this looks really great for viewing them all up close.

Glad you had a great time. We are looking forward to our trip in January. Hope the weather is mild so the animals are out.

Wow, great pictures! Can I ask what kind of camera you are using?

already asked and answered:

Thanks for sharing the pics!

We loved our first trip home to AKV this summer so much, that we already have next summer's booked.

And we are DEFINITELY booking the sunset safari!

Thanks for the Pictures we leave in 4 days for Disney to AKL. I can't wait. Great pictures

One of the couples in the safari were vegetarian, so they were served their own special servings of each course. This contributed to the excess food, I think.

Thanks for this tidbit. DH is vegetarian and I wondered what they did in this situation. I was sure they would accommodate him somehow but he hates to ask.

Sure thing - the vegetarian folks seemed pleased, and I was pleased to have three servings of that amazing macaroni steak. Win/win!
