I was wondering if anyone ever took a indoor grill or crock pot or something similar in a studio? PLease share recipes or a meal idea if you have one! :goodvibes

I just bought a Cuisinart Gourmet Griddler at a great deal at Costco with the intention of making Marinated grilled chicken kabobs, burgers, paninis and eggs/pancakes in the room to cut down on some costs.

Many bring crock pots, some even leave them in their Owners Lockers. Use the search function there are many posts w/ crock pot recipes. At the suggestion of a poster, I will be bringing my Mini Keurig for the 1st time, we love good coffee and it's very portable! I think the gourmet griddler would be an excellent item to bring!

I brought my crock pot last Jun, we were 11 in a OKW GV for a family reunion! Boy did it come in handy! It made the trip affordable and more enjoyable than always having to dine out.

With no exhaust fan in the studios, I think a grill, especially with meats, may be a problem. Smoke detectors are sensitive. A crock pot should be fine.

Plus, the limited area available to set up a griller just wouldn't be convenient, would it?

For pancakes, you may want to try the frozen variety that microwave, there are some decent frozen breakfast available.

if anyone has that link for crock pot recipes, could you please post it?
thanks,

It's pretty small about the size of letter size paper, but thick. It opens up so you can also use the other side. It would fit perfect in the studio on the counter. I just tried it with a Panini today. No smoke. I don't think it smokes, but will test it out on some thin sliced strip steak tonight. We could always do it on the balcony/patio or near there anyway.

Here's a pic:

I thought about a crock pot, but am afraid if leaving it on and leaving for a park and not be back in time.

There were a few DVC threads about crock pot recipes, but there is a great sticky that has many crock pot recipes over on the Camping board.

Not supposed to do any cooking on the patios/balconies.

I used my Cuisinart Griddler tonight on some steak and it barely smoked.

I like things cooked in a crock pot but I can't stand having it smell up the room. As a matter of fact when I cook something in the crock pot at home, I put it in the garage! An idea I picked up from a friend. I was thinking about maybe a small toaster oven.

Like was stated earlier on the thread, there is no exhaust fan in the studio. I don't think any appliance that creates smoke, grease or fumes is appropriate to use in the studio.

Is "barely smoked" the same as no smoke at all?

The Cuisinart Griddler smokes no more than a regular pan on the stove, no more than a using a pan to make pancakes. The griddler is not an outdoor grill, it is used on the countertop. You make a steak in a pan or bacon in a pan, you most probably will get more smoke than using the griddler. It is a higher end/multi function version of the George Foreman! The villas have fully equiped kitchens, just like your home kitchen.

Let compare the smoke from the griddler to the villa's microwave, overcook a bag of popcorn in the microwave, then we can talk about smoke! If you are in a studio, you can burn a piece of toast and generate more smoke than using the griddler to cook your panani and or pancakes.

The villas have kitchens w/ ovens and ranges to be used in much the same manner as the griddler, the griddler however, creates less heat, less smoke and uses a lot less energy!

Toast and popcorn do set off smoke alarms in studios, even without the food item being burnt and smoking.

The smell of foods in the crock pot when I came home from school is one of my fondest memories. I never thought of putting it in the garage-good idea, but I love the smell of foods cooking when I come home.

I'm sure it happens, but my point was and still is that the griddler (I have a similar model) emits no more smoke than a George Foreman grill and or a toaster. Certainly if you burn anything, no matter what appliance it's in, it will most probably set off the alarms. The griddler, just like a toaster, if used as intended, will not, unless of course you hold it up to the fire detectors. I've seen people burn things up in a crockpot for heaven's sake.

Surely, DVC would have removed the toaster/microwaves from the studios if the fire detectors were going off all the time.

Actually, I'm not sure they could, even if they wanted to do so. It would, legally, likely fall under the definition in timeshare law of a substantial change to what was sold. They could replace them with new appliances and updated technology, but there would still need to be a way to heat/prepare food items the studios. Just as they can't really replace the 2 queen beds in OKW studios with a bed and sofa sleeper.

I also LOVE smelling the food cooking in the crockpot!! Oh Man! I would never let the spiders in my garage have that pleasure! Anyway, I use my crockpot on & off at home. I have no problem leaving it on for 8 or 9 hours at a time on low. I also started using those crockpot liner bags which make cleanup a SNAP afterward. Since the sinks are so small in the studios if you're using a crockpot I would suggest giving those a try.:thumbsup2

For whoever's looking for a crockpot recipe... If you eat pork, one of THE easiest things you can do is prepare a dry rub to use on a pork roast (I make a big batch of it & store it in an old spaghetti sauce jar). I cook the pork roast all day with the rub on it (sometimes I add a can of beer too) and then when it's done I shred it up & put BBQ sauce on it and we have pulled pork sandwiches on rolls (with coleslaw of course).:lovestruc Yummmmy!! :thumbsup2 (If you made something that big you'd have to bring some plastic containers or Ziplocks to store the leftovers in 'cuz the frig in the studios is small.) But you can get a LOT of sandwiches out of a 4 Lb roast!

I enjoy the smell walking in the door as well, but it just lingers forever. I put it out in the garage sometimes when we cook something overnight.
