Ever had Dr. cancel trip due to low white blood cell count?

In about a week we will know for sure if FIL can go with us to Disney. He's just waiting on a blood test to check is white blood cell count.

Has Anybody here ever been asked by their Dr. to cancel a trip because of this?

I have known others who had to change plans because of this. I can mean an increased risk for infection, and being around so many people could be dangerous. Hope his count is ok and you don't have to reschedule

I know he's always been a germaphobe and certainly overplays his hand with his immuno deficiency. But I was curious just how bad/low it had to be before the doctor says "no way"

I've seen him read a restaurant menu by only using one finger "because everyone touches it". Then turn around a pick up a glass with his whole hand.... Even though the waiter touched the menu and touched his glass

My mom did at one point. Our Doctor asked us to cancel our Christmas trip up to Indiana. It was due to chemo treatments dropping her counts to dangerous levels. She actually required a whole blood transfusion due to how low her numbers fell.

It means a decrease in the bodies ability to fight off a new infection. In fact, Disney would be one of the LAST places I would go to with low WBC counts.

Thanks guys! We know his counts are never real high since stem cell transplant, but were wondering how low they would be if he really isn't allowed to go. Even before cancer/treatment he was super-paranoid about germs and touching things. So now when he says he can't do things due to low counts we have to wonder is it because he can't. Or he doesn't want to. They're from a generation where they just aren't forthcoming about his illness to their sons. Half the time we're just guessing at what's really going on

My DS17's WBC is typically 2.0, and its been as low as 0.3. I think it's more the Neutrophil count that you need to be concerned about. If that gets below 0.5, then you need to be really careful, but other than than he just takes the normal precautions (washing hands). I would see what the doc says.

Mine is routinely low due to cirrhosis. I have and would never cancel; my life is too limited as it is to be held back. My platelets are always wanky and I had a doctor once that was angry that I go to Disney but we have since fired him after his medical opinions turned out to be crappy.
