We are thinking of heading to Belize and specifically Ambergris Caye - the area looks downright gorgeous! Great snorkeling and diving (don't know how, but I certainly would consider learning for that trip), kayaking, beach, archeological sites.... we are more adventurous in our tourism, not really "beach bum" types..

Anyone been there? What did you think?

Haven't been yet, but it is one of the stops on our cruise this fall. I don't know when you plan on going, but if it's not for awhile I may be able to help you out in a few months.:D

Jeafl what cruise are you going on? My dh & I are going on the Carnival Spirit in Jan. and one of the stops we have is Belize.

I have friends that go there repeatedly. They LOVE it and say HURRY before it becomes commercialized. Lots of diving, fishing, very laid back. Ray says he can catch fish and bring it to the restaurant and they cook it for him! Their goal is to go for a month.

Haven't been there...yet...but would LOVE to!
Saw a show on the Travel Channel about Belize, and this couple stayed at a resort where the individual huts were built out over the water and in the living room you could retract the coffee table and underneath was a large "window" for viewing the fish, I thought that was so neat!! :teeth:

Visiting Belize before it is too commercialized is a big motivating factor for us. Back in the 1980s, we visited Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (Mexico) way before it became the tourity spot it is now. Zihuatanejo was a quiet little village (no hotels) - beautiful!

d.kurz - glad to hear your friends enjoy it so much! Sounds right up our alley!

Tigercat and Jeafl - I would like to hear your impressions upon your return. I imagine the ship crowds the port city, but if you get "off the beaten track", let me know!

Chatty - that sounds simply amazing - I'll have to check the travel channel website and see if they have any additional info...

Thanks all!

Belize is a decent place, but beware, the people are poor. Ambergris is a nice place. You will need to rent a golf cart if you want to get somewhere, other than walk. Most of the roads are not paved.

There are some places with a beach, but, for the most part it is a diving place. There are some good restaurants in san pedro. try the banana beach resort's restaurant. Ramon's village looks nice, as does journeys end.

From belize city, you will need either sea or air transfers to get to ambergris caye

tigercat, we are going on the Carnival Inspiration the week of Thanksgiving. We are also going to Cayman Islands, Cozumel and Costa May. Can't wait!
