Alarms at 6.45, us awake before the kids and more excited when they wake, it can mean oly one thing.......Its Orlando time!
The taxi arrives at 7.30am and i am lumbered with sitting in the front seat with the usual talkative driver
Now i am an ok flyer these days but the driver talking about security then setting the alarm on his phone so that he could demonstrate how he could trigger something beginning with B if he wanted to was making me a little edgy.
We arrived at Manchester 45 minutes later (thank god) we picked up the last of our cash which we pre-ordered at Travelex and q'd up for the check in. The security was tight, they pre-checked your itinerary then allowed you to check in then back to the pre-checkers to sign it off then onto security. We were pulled from the queue when they shouted for BMI 705, why i dont know. As we arrived in Terminal 3 airside an announcement was being called that our flight was going to be 2 hours late due to a technical difficulty- I think this may have something to do with a crack found on the gear of one of the other BMI's A330-200's and it was possible a check over of our plane G-WWBD that was carried out.
G-WWBD
The flight to Chicago was rough for the first 90 minutes due to CAT over the UK, N Ireland and the eastern Atlantic. From the pic of the A330 you can see it has real big elegant wings, well those babies were moving rather a lot I can say.
We arrive in Chicago still with 90 mins before the TED flight to Orlando. There was a 30 min line for immigration as a JAL 747 from the far east had beat us to it due to the delay, but bag pick up and customs was thankfully a breeze. Now Chicago is a big mother of an airport even with the train system and we were the last gate in terminal 1 of all things. We ran all the way to be greeted by....ANOTHER DELAY!!! arrrrgh. This was another 90 mins!!!! Eventually we took off, as we were approaching the last hundred miles to go i was watching a hell of a storm out of my window thinking "jeez i hope we dont fly through that!!"
Guess what...yes we did !!! (On the news the next day it revealed there was some serious home damage and the storm was very ferocious in apopca (spelling?)) As we descended the scene was outrageous, lightning everywhere and thunder heard in the cabin, then the captain made the obvious turn left and flew straight through the storm, lucky i had my brown pants on.
We landed safely and claimed our bags, with the exception of one that had been put on a flight that had gone at the same time, we waited 15 minutes for that and set off for the car.
We finally got to the villa at 12:45 am which was 3:30 mins later than i expected. I didnt get beer and i wasn't a happy man!
