Escape from Tornado Alley to Food, Tropical Storms and Mickey - Completed 3/22

Saturday, June 15 – Part 1 – Packing, Check Out, Shopping and the Tragical Express

Sorry, I went almost a week without a post. My sister is getting married tonight so we have had family in all week. I brought Braxton home this afternoon though to take a good nap so that he can be ready to go for the ceremony…he is the ring bearer. Bold move by my sister as he is just now entering the Terrible Two’s and really likes to run around and scream. He is all boy for sure. So I am probably going to end up being the actual ring bearer while carrying Braxton!

Well, we had just finished our final night and slept until about 7:15. I got myself one final Mickey muffin at the Bakery and finished packing up the room. I went down to check us out at around 9:45 and remembered I had forgotten to pay off some charges with our Disney gift cards the night before. We had about $300 left that I hadn’t paid off yet and I knew they were going to charge my card that night, I just forgot to go by and pay it off. It worked out though. I ended up using our leftover cards to pay our cruise deposit for the summer of 2014.

While I was checking out April and my mom left our bags with bell services and we got on a bus to Downtown Disney at about 10:00 am. Our Tragical Express bus wasn’t coming until about 2:30 so we were going to do some final shopping and grab some lunch.

Of course we spent some time in World of Disney. I think my mom grabbed a few small things, and April and I decided to get Braxton a snow globe. This is probably something that is relatively inexpensive ($6-$10) that we can get for him on trips every year as a keepsake. I also found a magnet for my office at school. Here is the snow globe we got:

We then stepped into the Basin store, which we hadn’t done on our previous trip and it was really cool. They have some good-looking stuff, it is just a little expensive. We then headed over here:

IMG_0303_zpsfbe22ea1.jpg

We weren’t looking for anything specific as Braxton wasn’t quite old enough to play with legos yet, but it was fun to look at all of the different sets. We didn’t stay long in here as their air conditioner was out and they had brought some portable units in, but it was still close 90 in there and there was no air circulation.

As we were heading back to get something to eat Braxton fell asleep in the stroller. He is one exhausted little boy!

We were heading back to lunch at Earl of Sandwich. We had taken April’s mom on our arrival day, but now wanted to take my mom and we all loved it again. Braxton woke up not long after we got there because of the commotion of the restaurant. We had to sit on the patio, because it was so crowded, but it was fine. Braxton enjoyed his lunch.

After lunch we went into the Once Upon A Toy shop and Braxton found a huge Tigger doll that he wanted. He has one just like this at Gigi’s house so we didn’t get it for him…I know, bad parents.

IMG_0306_zpsd30aca4b.jpg

April and I also built these two droids to give to Aprils two twin nephews who had a birthday while we were gone. There was also a fantastic cast member working here that helped us figure out some of the pieces we were struggling with. She was in a wheel chair, but wanted nothing other than to make sure we had the perfect droids. She was the epitome of what Disney cast members should be, and I am a little disappointed in myself that I didn’t write her name down in my notes. Anyways if you are ever in this store and need anything she is fantastic and will do whatever she can to help you. Here are our droids:

IMG_0307_zps8cc0d2cb.jpg

After making the droids we headed over to Ghiardellhi’s for some dessert. I had the brownie sundae and it was fantastic and April just got a cup of ice cream. She ate some of the sundae as well and loved it as much as me. Our final stop before heading back to the Boardwalk was the Christmas Store to find some ornaments. We like to buy an ornament each year. This year we ended up deciding on a four pack. They are very cool looking in how they represent the Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and Minnie.

IMG_0311_zps0f0a5ff0.jpg

After finishing up with the ornaments we headed to the Marketplace bus stop and waited about 5 minutes. The Downtown Disney buses are so bad to the Boardwalk as they serve all five resorts. Also, we witnessed something terrible on this bus ride. A boy who was maybe 12 years old was sitting next to his Dad and the bus was getting crowded at the Pleasure Island stop. The boy got up to walk across the aisle to ask his mom something and a lady who was carrying a baby got on the bus took his seat, not knowing someone had been sitting there. The dad, who was still sitting down, then surprised me. He proceeded to tell his son, “you never give up your seat…you have to take care of yourself”. I was appalled that this father was telling his son to just look out for himself instead of maybe teaching him a lesson about thinking of others and giving up his seat for this lady who was carrying a baby. I am not trying to be judgmental, but I teach teenagers all day every day in my job and see selfishness and “looking out for only yourself” as being the biggest problem in our society. If people would just think of others instead of themselves the world would be a much better place.

Sorry for the rant! We got back to the Boardwalk at around 1:50 and had about 45 minutes before our bus arrived. I had been looking for a polo that said Disney World. The best option I had found the entire trip was in the gift shop down on the Boardwalk, so I went down to decided whether to get it or not. I eventually found that and a hat that I liked and purchased them before heading back up to wait on the Magical Express bus. Here is the polo:

Joining in! I love baby's first trip reports! We took our son on his first trip in September/October when was 2 months old. Braxton is so adorable!

Congratulations to your sister. I hope the wedding was wonderful and I especially hope that Braxton did a great job as ring bearer. I'm sure he looked super adorable and earned lots of smiles and praise!

The last day is always the hardest, isn't it? You are having a great time and then you remember "oh yeah, I've got to go home today".

I honestly have to agree with you about selfishness being the biggest problem facing our society and that experience on the bus describes it very well. I honestly don't think that parent thought he was doing anything wrong.

EOS at the beginning and the end of a trip is certainly a good thing! :thumbsup2

Very nice polo!

Really enjoyed your TR and sad to see your final day is here.

Thanks for reading along!

The wedding was fantastic. My mom, grandma and two aunts worked their tails off turing a barn/horse arena place into a really nice wedding venue and reception. (My sister was marrying a cowboy). Braxton did very well. During rehearsal on Friday he did not want to even walk down the aisle on his own, but during the wedding he walked the entire way carrying his cushion and holding my hand. He even wore his cowboy boots without throwing a fit. He was certainly a hit!

The last day is always the hardest, isn't it? You are having a great time and then you remember "oh yeah, I've got to go home today".

I know. I don't know how to make that last day any better. You want to enjoy it so much, but in the back of your mind you are disappointed. I guess you just have to know when the next trip is planned.

I hate to talk bad about people, but I just don't like seeing able bodied men sitting on a bus when women and children and the elderly are having to stand. I am definitely not a perfect person by any means so I have no authority to judge, but I wish people would live more to serve others than themselves.

EOS at the beginning and the end of a trip is certainly a good thing! :thumbsup2

Love EOS. I wear my polo to work now and still love it. I will start a pre-trip report for our next trip once this one is over so you can click over there!

Saturday, June 15 – Part 2 – We Have a Tired Little Boy

After making our final purchases we had about 15 minutes left to mentally prepare for the worst ride of the trip, the Magical (a.k.a. Tragical) Express back to the airport. The bus arrived on time around 2:45 PM, and they had us to the airport by 3:30 or so. It then took us over an hour to get through security. The Orlando airport was crazy, but I think it is crazy almost all the time these days. I don’t understand why people cannot read the information at security. We were about five minutes from the front of the line when the dad in the family in front of us came back to the line with his family with large coffees from Starbucks for him and his wife. I mean there are signs everywhere that say you can’t take drinks through the security checkpoint, so they had to throw them away not three minutes later. This is the same family whose stuff ended up in my bins because they were not prepared to go through the machines so they were just throwing stuff everywhere once they got up to the scanners.

We got through the security checkpoint with the stroller again without a problem and were to our gate by 4:30. We had about 45 minutes and we went to find something to eat to take on the plane with us. So we got some sandwiches at Au Bon Pain (I think that is the name) to eat during the flight. I also like to take gum with me to chew during takeoff. I don’t have any major problems with the altitude, but it is nice to just be chewing some gum to make sure. This is when I found out they do not sell gum at the Orlando airport. I was very surprised when the lady in one of the stores told me this. I have never heard of there not being any gum sold at an airport. Oh well, I guess I will have to fake chew something during takeoff.

We boarded the plane at 5:30. We had the A boarding group on our Southwest flight so we all easily got seats together. We wanted to good seats as our plane was going to land in New Orleans, but we wouldn’t have to get off as it was continuing on to Oklahoma City. Now remember I said we got on the plane at 5:30 and our flight was scheduled to depart at 5:45. April and Braxton were snuggling and waiting for the flight.

IMG_0308_zpsb6162365.jpg

There were some thunderstorms in the area and they made an announcement that our pilots were coming from another plane and were still in the air waiting to land because of the storms, so we would be waiting as well. So we waited, and waited, and waited. Our pilots finally get on the ground and over to our plane by about 7:00 and we left not long after that. Braxton did really well during that hour, but we knew that we were going to be on this plane for the next three and a half hours and we thought we might be stretching our luck of how good he could be in a cramped space. Well, it ended up not being a problem because Braxton looked like this for about the next three and a half hours!

April posted this picture on Facebook at some point during the day too.

IMG_0117_zps5a5761b8.jpg

This boy was exhausted. He slept through the entire flights, even with having to stop in New Orleans. My dad picked us all up at the airport and we got home at about 11:30 PM; about an hour and a half later than we should have because of the storms. As soon as we got home Braxton, who had been sleeping for almost four hours, decided he need to play a little bit with his toys he hadn’t seen in two weeks.

IMG_0310_zps19618a39.jpg

So that was about it, 14 days of a magical Disney vacation in the books. Many people don’t understand why we love it so much, but there is no way for them to understand it until they actually try it. We had a fantastic first trip for Braxton and in a couple of days I can start our pre-trip report for our summer 2014 trip, which will include our first Disney cruise.

One last thing I need to include. April had somehow secretly bought and transported home a couple of things for me, which she gave to me for my birthday a couple of months later. A jacket that I had looked at a few times while we were in Disney World and a Boardwalk Resort magnet. I want a magnet from all the resorts we stay at, but I could not ever find one for the Boardwalk, but I guess she had this little surprise up her sleeve.

I’ll be back with one final installment to wrap things up and give some of our favorites.

Up Next: Wrap Up/Highlights

Wrap Up/Highlights

Our 14 day Disney vacation had finished and as teachers we are lucky enough to be able to just rest when we get home during the summer. I don’t know how people get home from a Disney vacation and go back to work the next day without at least one day of rest. I mean I would do it if it were the only option I had, but it would be tough. We rested for a few days and promptly got back into the Disney spirit by booking our first Disney cruise for this coming summer. We are about 3 months out from that trip right now so it is about time to get started with some serious planning!

For the last entry of this trip report I would like to share some of the things April and I liked the best throughout this trip to Disney World. So without further delay, here we go:

Favorite Attraction at Animal Kingdom
Jon (Expedition Everest)
April (Kilimanjaro Safari)

Favorite Attraction at Hollywood Studios
Jon (Rock ‘n Roller Coaster)
April (Voyage of the Little Mermaid)

Favorite Attraction at Epcot
Jon (Soarin’)
April (Test Track)

Favorite Attraction at Magic Kingdom
Jon (Space Mountain)
April (Big Thunder Mountain)

Best Non Ride Attraction in All Parks
Jon and April (Festival of the Lion King)

Best Overall Attraction in All Parks
Jon (Expedition Everest)
April (Rock ‘n Roller Coaster)

Best Table Service Restaurant
Jon (Ohana’)
April (Cape May Cafe)

Best Quick Service Restaurant
Jon (Earl of Sandwich)
April (Corn Dog Nuggets, Casey’s)

Best Snacks/Desserts
1st – Jon (Dole Whip)
April (Napoleon at Bakery in France)

The most surprising thing from this list is that April’s favorite table service restaurant this trip was Cape May Café. You see April does not really like seafood much, but she loved Cape May and loved eating the crab. I enjoyed Cape May as well, but I still had to go with ‘Ohana or else risk losing my DisDad membership card!

I guess that is about it. I have had a lot of people ask recently why we are going back to Disney World again this summer. Well, the only thing I can tell them is that until they go and experience it that they will not understand. We are looking forward to many Disney trips to come, but also many vacations to other places. We don’t vacation exclusively to Disney destinations, but it is a place that is full of experiences that you cannot get anywhere else. Thank you all very much for reading this report of our trip.

I think I will go ahead and do a pre-trip report for our summer trip this year since I have nothing else to post right now. So I hope you all will click over there and read and give us some ideas for our summer trip.

I didn't realize your trip was so long. Lucky you!

I am one of those crazy people who just goes back to work the next day. I drag around a bit, but I don't care.

Glad your flight home was uneventful but I am shocked they boarded you before the captain was even on the ground. How annoying.

Thanks for your final thoughts on your favorite attractions.

Looking forward to your pre trip report. Send me a pm with a link!

Well, I just loved reading your trip report. And oh my goodness – Braxton is as cute as a button. I’m in for your next report too. :)

I am so sad that your report is over. :( However, I am so excited to hear your plans for your cruise! 3 months is not too long! My plan is to go on a Disney cruise in a few years. I am hoping to get into hygiene school in August (my interview is Wednesday) and then plan a graduation cruise! My kids are so ready!

We were very lucky. I guess that is a nice perk of being a teacher. When we hadn't taken a vacation of any type in two years, so we really need a nice long one!

I could do it if that was the only option, but I don't envy you.

It was just annoying to us because we were trying to entertain a 2 year old for four hours and that extra hour and a half at the beginning of the flight didn't help. Braxton was so good though so it didn't end up being a big issue.

Looking forward to your pre trip report. Send me a pm with a link!

Will do in a few minutes...I think I am ready to start it.

We are very excited about the cruise and we are getting close. Good luck on your interview, I'm sure it will go great. Then you will get to plan that cruise!
