Escape From Craziness Part II to Fireworks, Food and A DVC Tour - A June 2018 Trip Report - Completed 3/30

We are back from our cruise!! We had a great 10 days vacation which included a 7 day Royal Caribbean Cruise

Day 3 - Part 5 - Thank Goodness for Bubble Machines

At about 6:45 we headed back towards Fantasyland as we had plans to meet up with our friends who were down in the parks for the first part of our trip. We had plans for a quick snack and then we all had FP’s together at a ride a little later.

First off a snack was in order and I had seen a new offering prior to the trip that I wanted to try, the new tater tot dishes at the Friar’s Nook. We got one of each type to split between DW, the boys and I. First up was the Buffalo Chicken Tots, followed by the Mexican Tots.

I would say these were just ok. I would probably get them again if I was in the mood, but they certainly weren’t amazing. I thought the toppings were good on both, but they were lacking in the amount of toppings. For instance on the Mexican tots they had queso over the top, but it was only enough to get on about half of the tater tots. If I’m getting queso I want it on all of them! Haha

The buffalo chicken ones were good to me, again they could have used more sauce. DW didn’t love these because she isn’t a big feta cheese fan, which is what these had. But overall I liked both, just nothing spectacular. I guess this was technically our dinner for the night as we weren’t planning on eating anything too big as we had the dessert party later on and they had recently started offering savory items with that as well as the desserts, so we were planning on getting our money’s worth.

After a little break we started the walk over to our FP. Past the castle and carousel and over towards the Haunted Mansion!

We got there about 7:30 and only waited about five minutes before we were inside the stretching room! It was a great ride, and DS6 had a great time riding with his friend! We hung out with our friends in Liberty Square for a bit before we had to head over to check in for our dessert party.

Not too long before our trip they started offering the after fireworks dessert party, so I booked that one. My thought was we would be the first people in the seating area, so we could get a good spot, then go do our desserts after. Of course the question about this plan was how would the boys do staying up that late...stay tuned to find out!

We checked in at 8:15, for a 9:00 fireworks show, and they directed us to the Plaza Garden’s viewing area. We got inside and settled at about 8:20. There wasn’t many people in when we got there and I’d say at about 8:45 it started getting crowded as the pre-fireworks dessert party people showed up. Here were our seats:

It was at this point, for the 40 minutes that we waited, that DW and I were so thankful for the bubble makers we had, which were obviously sent down from heaven to entertain our kids! I don’t know how we would have made it 40 minutes without these!

We had a a great view as we waited!

Of course the bubble machines were still a hit:

I’m sure he’s trying to figure out how to up the bubble count and make more come out!

We kept waiting and waiting and we finally made it to where it was getting a little darker...

...and darker...

...and finally, it was dark...

That must mean it was almost show time.

I got a picture of the boys, but didn’t warn them about the flash...well, that caught them by surprise!

Anyway, we made it to 9:00. We positioned ourselves right up next to one of the railings so we would have a little easier time keeping our spots. We also strategically placed the stroller to where DS6 could stand on that and watch the fireworks so we weren’t having to hold him the entire time. My muscles wouldn’t have been up to that!

I would say these were just ok. I would probably get them again if I was in the mood, but they certainly weren’t amazing. I thought the toppings were good on both, but they were lacking in the amount of toppings. I feel like the person serving up the bowls can really determine how much sauce you get. I kind of forgot about these, I wonder if they are still there. Might need to get them in August.

Your boys are adorable! I'm enjoying your trip report. Thanks for posting pics of your view from the dessert party area. We are treating ourselves to this for the first time this August. It's going to be so nice to relax before fireworks instead of fighting the crowds! Did the reserved area end up being very crowded? We are doing the desserts before portion of the party.

Thank you for the review of the tots! The Friar Nook tots appeal to me more than the Tatchos at Woody's Lunchbox as I don't like beans - it's good to know that they would be a good snack if you're hungry for tots but aren't worth going out of your way for.

I hope your kids make it to the dessert party in mostly one piece! I really enjoyed the original dessert party as you get to sit down during the fireworks, but I may have to change my strategy as the projections with the new show may not work as well from Tomorrowland Terrance. I'm excited to see what you think of the entire experience!

REAL LIFE UPDATE - I'M BACK!!!

Well...this seems to happen every fall during football season, but it has been a crazy last several months. As I've said before I'm a FB coach and Athletic Director so football season is needless to say "CRAZY"!!! But, it just ended and I'm back and trying to get caught up on stuff. I wish I had a good method to not let my trip report lapse for 3-4 months every fall, but I've yet to figure that method out!

Anyways, we are here and doing well and I'm going to try and bang out some updates between now and Christmas and try to get this report close to finished. I've already purchased Annual Passes for DW and myself in advance of our trip next summer and so we are excited about getting the planning process rolling for that trip too! Anyways, hope you all will still read! Glad to be back!!

Day 3 - Part 6 - “I Love This Dessert Party!”

Ok, here we go again. Sorry everyone for a long time off between posts, such is our life! Anyway, we left off in the Plaza Gardens for our reserved fireworks viewing. We were actually taking in the fireworks and then taking part in the “After Fireworks Dessert Party”. You see we are what you might call Dessert Party Veterans in the Magic Kingdom. I think we’ve done 5-6 dessert parties over the years. We just enjoy not having to fight the crowds and the all you can eat desserts don’t hurt either! Now, We started going back when it was just $28 per person to attend the part and now it is $69 and I think going up to $89 in February, so it’s undergone quite a big price increase and not a lot has changed about the experience. I guess that’s how things go at Disney!

Anyways, we decided to try the new part with the Plaza Gardens viewing and then desserts after as the original party on the terrace had gotten so popular that you couldn’t even see the fireworks without standing up at the rail 30 minutes before hand and saving a spot, which to us, defeats the purpose of doing the dessert party. So, this time we enjoyed the plaza viewing location it was a great view of Happily Ever After, which is a favorite show up ours! As you know if you follow our trip reports I’m not much of a photographer, but here are a few pics from our viewing spot.

DS2 loves fireworks, just not he loud noises! haha

After the show was over we headed over to our dessert party, which was on the other side of the aisle at the Tomorrowland Terrace from the normal dessert party. We had already gotten our wristbands before the fireworks to get into the viewing location, so they just had to check them, so this line went pretty quickly.

The desserts were ready:

Let’s just say we loved this dessert party after the fireworks. We weren’t rushing around trying to get things eaten so we could go save a spot at the railing because we had already watched the fireworks! Now, this experience was still pretty new at this point, so that is probably the reason, but the place was almost empty! There were maybe only 5-6 other groups in the entire place.

The kids also loved the station where they got to decorate their own cookie, this was DS6’s cookie.

Also, this was some something called Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake and it is delicious! My favorite item at the party!

The only negative to the after fireworks party that we found was that the kids were definitely tired at this point, especially DS2, but hey...perk up kid, you’re at Disney World. Not to mention your parents are veterans and we are going to let you sleep in as long as you want tomorrow!

We headed out of the party and decided to try and do a couple more things before we left, I mean we were going to sleep in tomorrow, so why not! First, we took a spin on Buzz Lightyear as it was just a five minute wait. Of course I can’t find the ride photo, not sure what happened to some of my pictures!

After Buzz we decided to call it a night after took a quick night time spin on TTA! I mean what better way to end of the night!

Is this not one of the best feelings at Disney World...your feet up on the TTA:

It was about 10:45 when we finished and we were certainly tired as you can tell:

We got to the bus stop at about 10:55 and a bus was just pulling out, but it wasn’t too big of a deal. The boys were pretty content sitting on the stroller as they were so tired! It did take about 15 minutes for another Swan/Dolphin bus to come, but one did and we were on our way back. It didn’t take long on the bus ride for this to happen:

We got back at about 11:30 and had everyone in bed quickly and ready to sleep for a while!

Day 4 - Part 1 - “I NEED MY OWN BISCUITS AND GRAVY”

After our late night for the Dessert Party and Fireworks we slept in until the boys wanted to get up, which was around 8:30 or so. That’s about 2 hours later than DS2 normally sleeps. Our plan was to get up and go eat breakfast at one of our favorite places before heading back to just spend some time relaxing at the resort this afternoon for some swimming and napping. We love having these easy mornings & afternoon’s the day after we were out late to let everyone recover and to enjoy the resort a bit. We were planning to heading to a park late in the afternoon for a bit, but this would be a pretty light park day. We were all dressed and ready by 9:15 and headed down to the lobby to go to our breakfast reservation. These boys!

We called for a Minnie Van and had plenty of time before our 10:05 reservation, but we couldn’t ever get a driver to connect after waiting until 9:35. I guess it was a busy time of the morning with people trying to get to the parks. The boys were still tired so they waited very patiently.

Well, I spoke too soon. Before long they were up and moving around!

We ditched the Minnie Van effort and called an Uber. The reason we like Minnie Van’s more is the car seats are included and the drivers really know how to put them in quickly and safely. I didn’t take any notes on the Uber other than to say the driver was really good. I’m assuming he installed the car seat correctly as I didn’t note anything to the contrary. It’s always kind of a gamble though with Uber as to what car seat you are going to get and usually I install it myself to make sure it is done correctly. As I recall this was a positive experience thought and the cost was only about $12 instead of the $25 for a Minnie Van.

Anyway’s after a short drive we had arrived at one of our favorite places in all of Walt Disney World:

We love Wilderness Lodge and I think we’d stay here every trip if we could! We were headed for one of our favorite breakfast locations, Whispering Canyon. DW was ready for her favorite meal in all of Disney World!

The restaurant wasn’t too crowded, but we’ve found the 9:30-10:30 time frame is a good time to have breakfasts with lower crowds at several places.

Our waiter quickly got our drinks. I didn’t write anything about our waiter except that he was good and didn’t do anything too crazy. Which is fine with us, we usually just go with the flow here. If we get a server that wants to do some of the “fun” stuff we play along and if we don’t it’s all good to. I also think they aren’t quite as crazy later in the breakfast service as they are getting ready to turn the restaurant for lunch and they’ve all been on shift for a while at this point. Anyways, he was polite, friendly, had a little fun with us, and kept our food and drinks full!

While we waited on our food DS6 did one of his favorite things...word searches. He seriously loves these things!

And before long this was sat down on our table.

Oh my...that is one of my most favorite sights! DW also wasted no time in telling our server she was going to need her own biscuits and gravy. She got an eye roll from the server, but eventually he brought these.

We also got a plate of bacon and sausage for DS2. Since he has an egg allergy we usually just as for some meat for him as those are the things he will eat the most anyway. He doesn’t eat much bread or potatoes, but the kids loves him some bacon and sausage!

The aftermath:

We finished our great meal and the boys went out with DW to play in the entry area while I settled up the bill. The boys love this area!!

Overall, this was another great meal at Whispering Canyon. The food is always great and it is definitely one of DW’s favorites. We always like how it fits into one of our easy rest mornings as we can come eat after sleeping in and not having to rush to get to a park. And...we will never pass up a trip to visit Wilderness Lodge!

I got an ADR for the early dessert party with the garden viewing for our upcoming trip - I'm not sure my one-year-old would do as well with the post-show dessert party as your kids did! I'm really impressed that they hung in there and you even enjoyed a ride afterward! It sounds like a great evening.

We planned a lazy day after our dessert party, too! We currently have a breakfast ADR planned at Kona Café, but WCC would be excellent, too. I loved my breakfast there back in 2016. I'm glad your wife got her own biscuits and gravy and your kids enjoyed the experience!

Well, this may have been our last dessert party. They are quickly pricing us out of it for sure! We are seriously considering just doing the Villains After Hours for next summer. We can do it for $115 which is only $25 more than the new dessert party price and it includes three hours of extra park time with short waits for rides. It doesn't include a full dessert party buffet, but it includes soda, popcorn, and Mickey Bars and stuff like that. So I think we can manage! I just feel it is a better value for the price than the dessert party now.

We just had to give the kids a good nap that day and definitely some sleep in time the next morning.

Day 4 - Part 2 - “Dad, Do I Have Anything on My Face?”

After breakfast we headed back to the Dolphin. This time we were able to quickly call a Minnie Van and it was a great experience over all. We got picked up within two minutes and the driver was super fast about installing the car seat and getting us on our way.

It did cost about twice as much as an Uber, but I think if I had a small child like DS2 that was still in a regular car seat I would probably use it. As our kids get older and both are moved into booster seat age it wouldn’t be quite as big of a deal to us.

Of course one of the great parts about the Minnie Van is the drivers are so personable and you can have some great “Disney” conversations. We were able to talk about our breakfast and what we had planned the rest of the day and the cast member seemed super interested in our trip! I also found it neat they had this phone charging device in the vehicle:

DS2 enjoyed his ride in the car seat.

We were back at the Dolphin about 10 minutes after leaving Wilderness Lodge and DS2 was ready for a nap just a few minutes after getting to the room. This is the beauty of a rest day after a late night. We have plenty of time for that today.

DW and DS2 stayed back and got a nap in at about 11:45. I was going to take DS6 for some swimming before his rest as he wasn’t going to sleep as long as DS2. We swam for about 30 minutes, but then storms moved into the area and we had to clear out by about 12:30. But, to us that sounded like the perfect time for a snack!

We got some ice cream from The Fountain and went to sit in the lobby for a little bit while DS2 napped. DS6 looked at me at one point and said, “Dad, is there something on my face?”

Yes son, I think there is! We had brought some of his new cars with him to play with as well and I just did a little resting myself. This lobby is a great hangout spot with a lot of nice seating.

Before we headed back to the room we stopped through the Disney gift shop in the lobby and DS6 wanted me to take his picture in this hat:

It was time to head back to the room but we walked around a little bit on our way. Wait Dad, I have to tie my shoe!

We also stopped down by the model of the Swan and Dolphin area as DS6 thought this was really cool. I must admit I stood and looked at it several times on the trip too!

We headed back to the room at about 1:30 as that was going to give DS6 enough time to lay down and nap for about and hour and a half before we headed out for a quick park visit this evening.

Day 4 - Part 3 - Let’s Play the Drums!

We left off with me and DS6 coming back to the room so he could take a little nap before heading out for the late afternoon and evening. We had plans this evening to head to a part at around 4:00, but to not stay out too late. We were going to hit another park for rope drop tomorrow so the plan was to get in bed at a decent hour. After letting DS6 sleep we got up and around at about 3:00 and then arrived at the bus stop at 3:40. The boys were rested and ready to go! We had a bus by 3:47, so only a seven minute wait! Pretty good!

Where were we headed you ask?

We got to the park at around 4:00 and were inside and seeing this by 4:05.

We spent about 10 minutes looking in the gift shop. We found some cool looking Animal Kingdom merchandise that we’d never seen before.

Our first order of business was a FP over at Na’vi River Journey, but first a few pictures by all of the great scenery in Pandora.

We got in line at about 4:20 and it was a good thing we had a FP, the posted wait was 95 minutes!

Umm...we like this ride, but 95 minutes...that’s a long time! When we got out DS2 was adamant that he “needed” to play the drums. Of course I love watching the boys play in this area too, so we stopped for a few minutes.

By about 4:45 though we had to make our way back to Africa as we were planning on catching the Lion King Show at 5:00. This is such a cool little pathway that makes it nice to get to Africa, but super convenient if you are headed to the Lion King Theatre. Also, no matter how crowded the park is anytime we've been on this path it looks completely uncrowded like this:

Day 4 - Part 4 - It’s a Tiger!!!

We arrived at Festival of the Lion King at 4:52 for a 5:00 show time and were able to get a seat.

Our plan with this show is that there aren’t many bad seats so we are not big fans of showing up and waiting in much of a line for it. We typically show up 5-10 minutes ahead of time and get a seat that is fine. You all with kids know that waiting in line is never a great thing with smaller children so we just try and avoid that. Anyway, the Lion King show was fantastic as always.

After the show we headed to grab us some dinner...our destination:

We don’t eat here that often as DW is not a fan of this type of food, but DS6 and I enjoy it. DS2 didn’t eat much on this trip except for mac and cheese and french fries. So we just got him a side of french fries here.

DW and I got an order of Honey Chicken and an order of the Chicken Fried Rice to share.

The fried rice was really good. The honey chicken was good as well, it’s just not something DW loves. I enjoyed it and would get it again though! DS6 got some chicken strips which I forgot to photograph and he loved them, but also ate some of the honey chicken. We also got some egg rolls, which are awesome here!

DS6 passed the time after eating his food playing with the bubble toys, which we carry with us every evening in the parks to help the kids pass some time!

DS2 was still busy stuffing his face with french fries as it was one of the only things he was eating on this trip!

We headed back into the Maharajah Jungle Trek at about 6:15 and the boys enjoyed exploring this area.

Both boys were super excited the tigers were out so we spent some time looking at them!

We really enjoyed our walk through this area. It is really one of the hidden gems of Animal Kingdom. Also, the theming is great in this area which just adds to the experience.

After looking at the animals we headed over to Expedition Everest. DS6 and I went first with a fastpass and waited only about five minutes.

After we finished our ride DW and DS6 went back and used the child swap pass we got to ride Everest while I stayed with DS2. DS6 has come to love Expedition Everest and I think he’d just keep riding it over and over if we could. Right now though we were off to Dionoland for some more fun!

Day 4 - Part 5 - Sorry, He’s the Quiet Kid

We headed over into Dinoland around 7:10 PM, but saw a few Rivers of Lights floats moving into place on our way.

At 7:20 DS6 and myself went to take a ride on Primeval Whirl. This was DS6’s first ride on this due to the really tall height requirement, but he’d ridden the spinning coaster at Six Flags, so he wasn’t scared at all.

We had a great ride and DS6 loved it and as I remember we might have done this one twice because the line only took us 5 minutes or so to get through. The first time was with a FP, but once we got up to the ride there wasn’t hardly anyone on it in either line. While we were riding this DW and DS2 went over to Triceratop Spin and had a fun ride!

After the rides, we stopped by Donald’s Dance Party in Dinoland and the night took an unexpected turn. The boys were loving the dance party and dancing quite a lot with all, especially when Chip and Dale came out dressed as dinosaurs. At some point a couple of people in “suits” came over to us and asked if they could video our boys for a promo video they were shooting. We asked DS6 if he wanted to do it and he was pretty nervous, but decided he’d try. They walked us back down a trail to a remote part of Dinoland where they had a bunch of cameras and stuff set up. They gave us all some water and snacks and we had to sign a waiver that they could film our kids. They also wanted to interview DS6 as they were looking for some kids of his age to answer a few questions about the dance party.

DS6 went to do it, but he was really shy on camera. I told the lady, “Sorry, he’s the quiet and shy kid.” DS2 would talk to anyone about anything, but they wanted kids a little older than that. She did say she asked him what kind of dinosaurs Chip and Dale were and DS6 was the only kid that had gotten interviewed that knew they were a triceratops and stegosaurus. Anyway, he did great and we may or may not have bribed him with picking a new toy if he did it. It was a neat experience.

Anyways, after the strange part of the evening DS6 and I went ahead and used another FP we had at Dinosaur. Of course some skeleton pictures on the way in:

We headed out of the park around 8:45 as we wanted to get the kids in bed as we were doing a rope drop again in the morning. We did see this shirt while leaving the park and thought this would be the perfect souvenir for DS2. I think we just made a note of it as this point, but we did end up getting it for him!

DS6 was also excited to play with the dinosaur toy he picked out for agreeing to do the interview! He was loving this:

We got on a bus at 8:55 with out much of a wait and were back in the room by 9:20.

Before too long we had the boys in bed and resting up before another fun day tomorrow.

The lines for the Pandora rides are nuts! I can't imagine waiting that long for a ride.

I'm with you on The Lion King - I enjoy the show, but I don't wait long in line.

Was your dinner from the Yak and Yeti QS? I love the restaurant, but have never tried the QS.

How fun about the Dinosaur Dance Party! I understand why your son got a little nervous, but what an awesome experience!

It sounds like you had a great time at Animal Kingdom! Based on your pictures on the way in, more people seem to be streaming out than coming in. Hopefully that made for shorter lines for you!

The lines for the Pandora rides are nuts! I can't imagine waiting that long for a ride.

I know! I mean Flight of Passage is great, if I didn't have kids with me I'd consider a 45 minute wait or so for it. Now, Na'vi River Journey...don't get me wrong it's a cool ride with some cool visuals, but I wouldn't wait more than 10 minutes for it I don't think.

I'm with you on The Lion King - I enjoy the show, but I don't wait long in line.

Totally agree. I am fine showing up five minutes before show time and getting a seat in the theatre anywhere. If by some chance it's at capacity it's not a big deal, we'll come back later.

Was your dinner from the Yak and Yeti QS? I love the restaurant, but have never tried the QS.

Yes, the quick service. We've been to the sit down restaurant once, early in our Disney life, and didn't love it. Probably need to try it again.

How fun about the Dinosaur Dance Party! I understand why your son got a little nervous, but what an awesome experience!

It was kind of neat to see something "behind the scenes".

It sounds like you had a great time at Animal Kingdom! Based on your pictures on the way in, more people seem to be streaming out than coming in. Hopefully that made for shorter lines for you!

I definitely feel that park empties out later in the day. Even the standby lines at Everest & Dinosaur, which we had a FP for, were only 20-30 minutes as I recall. Dinosaur was probably even shorter.

Day 5 - Part 1 - “Daddy, Me Go Again!”

After getting everyone in bed at a good hour the night before we were up bright and early as we were going to do something we don’t do very often, try a morning Extra Magic Hour. We tend to like the morning ones better than evening ones, but only if we can be there when it opens to make sure we use the entire hour. Anyways, we were up at 6:50 and were headed out of the room by 7:25. One of the few reasons we were trying this is we were so close to Epcot and could just walk to the International Gateway. Of course, the walk over awesome!

We were at the International Gateway by 7:45 and were inside the park by 7:50.

The crowd at the IG wasn’t too bad, although I bet that isn’t as much the case now with the Skyliner open!

They didn’t let us move past the bridge at the IG until 8:00 so we headed around to ride Frozen, but...it was down when we got there! It had opened on time, but within five minutes it was down and we were trying to figure out what to do. We headed over towards Test Track and DW and DS6 got in line, but it was pretty long already. Frozen being closed really cost us some time this morning for sure, but they were going to get a good ride in at Test Track.

Meanwhile DS2 and I were going to head back towards Frozen as it was about 8:25 and we noticed it was open again. Not before pointing out a monorail though.

DW and DS6 had a great time on Test Track.

DS2 and I got back to Frozen and the sign said 30 minutes, but I think the down time had a lot of people headed to other places, and we only waited 3-4 minutes total.

DS2 enjoyed the ride and we actually got right back in line and did it again as the line was just as short! DS2 enjoyed this gift shop after the ride...

...although he did not like these horns on me! haha

Meanwhile, DW and DS6 had a fun time at Test Track. DS6 always likes looking at the real cars in the exit area. He’s definitely a car guy!

We all met back up at about 9:00 after our rides, but not before seeing this beautiful sight!

So, the EMH hour was over and we didn’t get as much accomplished as we wanted due to Frozen being closed when we arrived, but we did get Test Track in for DW and DS6 and I had a child swap to use later and then DS2 and I got a couple of rides in on Frozen once it opened, so not a terrible morning!

It's so frustrating when rides are down first thing in the morning! Even though EMH wasn't as productive as you'd hoped, I'm glad both kids were able to ride something they were excited about. Multiple rides on FEA are certainly not possible later in the day!

It is frustrating, but sometimes it happens. The boys got to ride the rides they wanted. DS6 could care less about Frozen and DS2 was of course not doing Test Track...so all was good!!
