thanks in advance!!!

We were at Disney Aug 15-24. I also had heard (on the Dis, I believe) that you could pick a pearl at Epcot. So, we checked it out, and here's what we did. Go to the Japan pavillion, and go into the gift shop. Once inside, about half way back on the left, there is a counter with aquariums on it. Inside the aquariums, are oysters . My DD picked out an oyster, and the CM opened it, and presto ! Inside was a pearl. Each pearl is a different size and color. They clean it for you, and measure it for you. Then what you do with it is up to you. You can pick out a setting for it right there, and they will mount it for you, or you can take it with you and do with it as you please. My DD picked out a birthstone necklace, and had it mounted. She thought it was awesome !! The whole thing, combined with Miyaku, the candy lady, was pretty cool. Have fun and good luck !! :thumbsup2

Yes we did this a couple of years ago at Japan. I believe you can also do it at Downtown Disney, Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach and also at Sea World( where they have divers who go actually go down for the oyster in a huge glass walled tank). You can watch them diving through the glass wall.
My daughter picked an Oyster and she got a beautiful pale pink lustre pearl. The lady in front of us got a much larger pearl which was quite creamy yellow in colour and later, I saw a lady get a grey/black one which was so beautiful. We had ours mounted in a gold setting with a tiny diamond(cz?) above and it is really special. If your pearl is of a certain size, they bang a little drum and make an announcement to the store! I think if you wanted to try and match your "chosen" pearl for a pair of earrings, they have others ready that you can buy and they will mount for you. I guess the chances of you opning other oysters and getting 2 pearls to match, are pretty slim!

Choosing the oyster was really was quite a special thing to do. We gave the necklace to my Mother, who had been diagnosed with Cancer shortly before our vacation to WDW. She passed away a few months later and I now have the necklace to give back to my daughter when she is older.

I thoroughly recommend doing it and I don't remember the price but I know I thought that it was very reasonable (including the setting)
PS they say you should choose the ugliest looking oyster..it worked for us!

We did this last June and thought it was pretty cool. My daughter picked the oyster and she happen to get a double. They banged the drum and announced it. We had a necklace set for her with one pearl and I got a ring with the other. It seems like it was between $10 and $15 to pick the oyster.

I have done this twice now. The first time was with my daughter at DTD. My dd chose both oysters and it was amazing that our pearls are so close in size and color that we could have had them mounted as earrings. The second time I was alone in Japan. The pearl I chose there is considerably smaller but still beautiful.

I believe that it cost $14.95 to chose the oyster. They to chose the ugliest and hairest oyster to get the bigger pearls. . . I really liked the choices for settings that I had in DTD better than Japan. But in Japan, they wrote the size of the pearl on the zippy bag. . .

HTH!

I picked my pearl in Japan at Epcot last year. It was lovely! I had them set it in a beautiful charm that I selected from the display there. It was ready in a few hours and it is gorgeous. I wore it every day for months until one day the pearl came loose. :sad1: I brought it with me last week on our vacation and I took it into Japan and they fixed it for me, free of charge! I am so happy to have my favorite vacation keepsake back.
Here is a picture of the setting..the color is a little off because of the flash.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago -- picked one in Japan and got a 7.25mm white pearl - the next day did it in DTD and got an 8mm black pearl! I had a 6.5mm yellow that I'd gotten in Epcot 17 years ago and never did anything with - so I'd brought it with me. The shop at DTD has a LOT more settings and different styles than Japan - so I had two set in a ring and one in a pendant. I spent more than I should have, but I LOVE them - and they're the best souvenir I have from Disney! It's a lot of fun.
Here's a pic of my treasures:

My girls did exactly that 8 yrs ago when we took them to WDW. Both picked oysters with gold 6.75mm pearls. I was amazed. I wasn't so lucky in Jan when DH and I went alone, all different sizes. We have a total of 6 now. I still haven't gotten them mounted, I have an idea for them but need to find someone to actually do it for me.

I love doing this, it's so much fun. My DSis was with us when DH bought my oysters so I let her help choose since her DH didn't get her one. She had as much fun as I did.

wow that is awsome, what other little ideas like this can we do at epcot ?

What are the approximate costs for a simple necklace or ring setting? This sounds like a great idea for a special vacation keepsake.

Where in DTD can I find the pearls? And does anyone know if they have sterling silver settings?

Thanks.

The pearls in DTD are at a place called The Pearl Factory - it's an outdoor shop - almost like a big cart/stand. It's right on the lakefront, if I remember correctly, between Goofy's Candy Co. and the Pin Traders stand. Somewhere in that general area!

Yes, they do have sterling silver - also a lot of white gold. My sister usually gets silver but she got the white gold b/c it was prettier and really no more expensive.

HTH :)

We just got back on Weds 9/26 and when we went to Japan @ Epcot the lady we watched actually got 2 pearls, very rare from what the man said.
The price was $14.99 it was neat to see how they found the pearl, cleaned it etc.. there is also some info on how a Pearl is made.

A friend of mine came back a week before we left and her DD got one as well. Very nice keepsake.

I just got the simple setting where they drill a hole in the pearl and add the piece the necklace goes through. I can't remember exactly, but it was less than $30.

I have always been told the ugliest oysters made the most beautiful pearls. Some life lesson. LOL

I recently went to WDW for the first time and while we(DH and I)were at Epcot, I picked a pearl in Japan. It was a little over 7mm with a pink lustre to it. The lady said it was the biggest she'd seen that day. DH had it set into a pretty sterling silver ring for me that I wear on my right hand ring finger. For the pearl and the setting it was around 50 bucks. I love my ring though...its beautiful!

I think picking a pearl is the thing I'm most looking forward too!!

That it was cheaper to do it at DTD than to do it in Japan. Correct me if I'm wrong. I wore my pearl everyday since my April trip until the chain broke last month. I need to get a new chain but at least my pearl is still in good condition.
