This is our first time going to Disneyland and I am confused as to how the ePackage and paper ticket work. Do I print the tickets prior to getting to Disneyland or are the issued at the turnstile, or both? Are the paper tickets similar to receipt paper or more durable? Is a lanyard for my children to keep track of their paper ticket a good idea? Sorry I am so confused! TIA!

You can scan into the parks with your tickets on the app, they should give you paper tickets if you want them when you first enter, or you can continue using your phone.

You should have either an email (that you can print), or in your app, you’ll have a barcode that you’ll scan into the park with. The paper ticket they’ll give you at scan-in is card stock paper, but still can be torn. I would make sure your tickets are scanned into your app on your phone and put the paper tickets away, unless you need them (like if your phone dies or something).
Depending on your kids’ ages, lanyards are fine if they have the plastic protector, but honestly, I would just keep all of them safe in one place. Also, take actual photos of your tickets also, just as another layer of protection. (I’m kinda paranoid, so I tend to have ticket/Magic Key info in multiple places, just in case, haha)
