Help. How does one go about finding a job? I know this sounds stupid but I am trying to help DH and I don't know what to do.

We have been together 13 years. He was on short term disability when we first got together and has worked for his dad for the last 11 years.

Unfortunately, I don't think he should have ever worked for his dad. Due to some other family issues, dad wanting to retire, and lack of work at the moment, DH needs to find a new job.

He works in the sheetmetal industry which isn't the greatest right now and he is non union on top of that.

He has been considered self employed all these years because dad didn't feel like messing with taxes and stuff so no unemployment help.

I helped him get registered at Texas Workforce Commission. But there is pretty much no work in the field.

What other ideas do y'all have? What else can I do to help? He has always either been military or worked for his dad. He has never really had to actually had to find a job. I'm just stressed and not thinking straight. Help!

ok, first--take a deep breath. Now, is it possible for him to join the union? If so, they may have some listings in the industry or related. How about going back to school? Does he work on his own car? Perhaps get his cert.in auto mechanics? What is he good at, what does he like to do? Don't focus on one thing--be open to anything. And give him a big hug to let him know you love him and care about him.

Is there something he can do to start his own business? My hubby was laid off in January and he has started his own electrical business. Not great timing but it is something he always wanted to do anyway. Things are very tight money wise for us right now but I work so that helps.

I would suggest your hubby checkout craiglist. My hubby has gotton several jobs from there. Plus there are always people wanted something done that your hubby (or you) could make some extra $$$ at.

A lot of towns and community colleges are offering career counseling, job fairs, and other resouces for job hunters. Google your town and local colleges and see what pops up. They can help with writing a resume, job hunting tips, all sorts of things, and they are usually free.

i want to say Chicago526's idea is a great one. I did this and not only did they help me with the writing, they helped me identify some of the strong points I had developed over my career as a sahm and how I could translate them into a new job.

Also what are his passions? does he have any hobbies that might turn into his own business? now may be a good time to reinvent himself.
Good luck
