Can anyone tell me which sit down restaurant is open for lunch on the Magic for Embarkation day? last time we did Cabanas, but I keep reading about an MDR option. Thanks!

As stated, Cariocas. It is a buffet. The main difference is the CM seats you at a table and brings your drinks to you.

Is the restaurant food better than the buffet food on embarkation day or basically the same?

I find the food onboard is fairly comparable, regardless of where it's served. Well, except for Palo. But the "regular" dining venues = pretty much the same. And the meal on embarkation day (in Cariocas) is still a buffet, and somewhat more limited than the one in Cabanas.

Thank you all for your replies. For those of you who have used Cariocas as opposed to Cabana's, did you feel it was as crowded? I know that is a bit of a loaded question and will depend so much on times boarding, etc. but just your overall thought?

I feel Cariocas is less crowded. But as Princess Shmoo said, I find the buffet has less options. Last time at Cariocas I couldn't find shrimp, which made it a deal breaker for me for next time :).

Also, I found with younger children there were more options at Cabanas too.

To me, Cariocas feels less crowded because people aren't milling around trying to find a table.

Parrot Cay ... err .. Cariocas is less "crazy" to me. I liked the "straight through" buffet line rather than the everyone needing to go everywhere chaos that is Cabanas.

But it also depends upon when you go. We like to be up on the pool deck area when the weather is nice - not too hot (July / August) or too cold (Dec / Jan / Feb) depending upon the weather.

RE: Cabanas, on our last cruise (January with nice weather) we went to Cabanas. There was a station with Salads and Crack and Peel Shrimp. And a long line. One of the CM's told the crowd that if they just wanted the shrimp to crowd up and in and skip the salads. Well that made things even worse because those of us that wanted both had to fight to get both. The "old fashioned" long line that has everything is at least civilized - even though some people can be slow and overwhelmed by all of the choices. Get Out Of The Line (John Pinette)!
