My sister in law and I have each have an Elmo TMX doll that we would like to donate to a deserving (for lack of a better term) child for Christmas this year. We will not donate the toy at a drop-off location. I'm afraid the dolls won't make it where they are intended.

Any suggestions on where to donate or how to make sure the doll gets to the intended recipients?

Off the top of my head, I am thinking a children's hospital might be a place to consider. It's sad to have to be concerned that somehow the Elmo wouldn't get to a child that really needs one. Kudos to you and your SIL for doing this :thumbsup2

In the past we have donated gifts to the salvation army by picking a child off a giving tree at our local mall. You give them the gifts wrapped so no one would know what it was. I am afraid with the large demand for elmo, being positive its going to a deserving child will be difficult. If you are a church goer, maybe theirs a family at church that cant afford gifts?

How about donating it to an organziation who will then raffle it off?

Is there a headstart or pre-school in your neighborhood that serves a high number of low income children? I know that when I used to teach low income kids there were always a couple of chldren where the teachers would chip in to make sure they had gifts for the holidays.

If you know of a school like that I'd call the guidance counselor and ask them if they have a child who might really like this -- that way you're giving it directly to an individual. You're also benefitting 2 people, the child (and his family of course, most mothers and fathers would put the sight of their child opening a great toy at the top of their own Christmas list) but also the teacher who otherwise would be paying out of their pocket.

One thing I might do is to try and give the Elmo to a child with significant disabilities, perhaps by starting with the guidance counselor of whichever school houses your preschool special education classes. I say this because I think of toys like Elmo as being particularly fun for kids who have limited play skills -- either because of a developmental problem such as autism or cognitive delays, or because of a motor skill problem
