I posted this on the family board, but some suggested to put it over here, so here it goes...

Hey all -

We are going to Disney with both sets of grandparents this December, and one of them has made the annoucement that they will need an electric wheel chair. My question is - can you rent them from Disney to have them for your whole stay, or should we use an outside company, and if so, do you have a name? We will be there for 7 days - how much does it run about?

TIA!

Also - how hard is it to get on the bus with one? Do you have to get out of it, or can you just roll on in??

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

First thing is a terminology problem. An Electric Wheelchair, usually referred to as a power chair, is generally customized for the user and operated by a joystick.

An Electric Convenience Vehicle, usually referred to as either an ECV or a scooter, is either three or four wheels and has a handlebar similar to that of a bicycle for steering with a thumb-activated lever which controls the speed.

ECVs are available for test driving at such places as WalMarts or large grocery stores. Note that the rentals are smaller and do not have the gigantic baskets.

ECVs can be rented either from Disney or from off-site vendors.

Power chairs may only be rented from off-site vendors. Normally they will only rent a power chair to a person who already has one, and they have to be given data for all sorts of settings, usually provided by the person's equipment provider at home.

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #2 there will give you lots of information about all rentals and Post #5 discusses buses.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

I made a long reply to your post on the Family Board, so look there - if you can't find it, let me know and I'll find it for you and bump it back up to the top. Otherwise, I'll repost it here.

It's kind of additional information to what Cheshire Figment wrote here.
