When I bought a stove ten years ago the guy at the appliance store told me that the flat top took longer to heat up so I didn't get one. That's no longer true.
I never minded the coils and it wasn't too hard to keep clean. But when I moved in with my dad it was another story. The man FRIES food at least once a day. There was no way to keep the stove clean.
I bought a new stove top that is flat, and I love it. I would not buy it in white or a light color though. Mine is black and is very easy to keep clean.
I was surprised to read that Consumer Reports rated the electric stoves so well against gas as so many people swear by gas. For simmering and holding low temps the electrics won out.
