We have never been to Key West before and would like to explore the area.

Has anyone rented an electric car? Who did you go through, and would you recommend them?

It will be me DH, and DD's 10 and 4. Would DD 4 need a car seat?

Thanks:)

We rented one. The 4 seater is twice the price of the 2 seater. You can get coupons from many different spots. Stop at any booth even if they don't rent electric cars they still offer you coupons for other vendors. The coupons give you extra time, no discounts. The cost was about 89.00 for a 4 seater for about 4-5 hours. Parking is tough though and they do ticket you if you park in wrong places. We rented right across from Sloppy Joe's Bar...Mark

Hubby and I rented one, right near the dock...near the Pier House at 1 Duval Street. They were great..we loved the cart.

We didn't have an problems at all with parking..you just park in the regular parking spots..like a car uses.

Can't remember the name of the company, but, they were great..they have the map for getting around, gave us the phone number if we had any problems at all with the car. We didn't have any problems, booked for 4 hours, only needed it for two. Pulled back in, they came right out of the booth, asking is something wrong..we said, nope, just didn't take us as long as we thought it would. They said, no problem, crossed out the price, made the contract for 2 hours and we were on our way.
We didn't even ask them to do that, they offered before we had the chance to ask. I thought that was excellent..although, I don't think they have any problem renting these things out.

WebRay,
It would be great if you can think of the name of the company from which you rented. They sound very fair, and it sounds like a blast. I am always looking for little things to turn the touring into an adventure-although I don't know if my 13 year old DD will want to be seen being driven around in a an electric cart!
Thanks so much
Kathy

Just wanted to ask what are the electric cars?? I am picturing golf cars...is that what they are? Please let me know...I may be intrested in looking into them also.

There are a few places to rent the cars from. Some will come to the pier and pick you up. Remember to take a credit card with you and your drivers lic. plus check with your auto insurance co. to see if your covered renting a vehicle.

Key West Cruisers 1-888-800-8802 or 305-294-4724

Sorry, I can't remember the name..but, you can't miss it. The Pier House..is a huge resort on the water..and the little stand is right to the right of it..as you stand outside the gate facing it...the golf cart stand is on the corner, same side of the street. There is a little fenced area with the carts all lined up. If they don't have the size you need, the guy will drive you over to where they do have one for you.

I think your 13 year old daughter would love this..I know mine would have..she is now 22 and would still love this.

They are a riot..we had the best time, and it is the greatest way to get around key west.

Don't forget to head down to Bo's fish market for a fresh sandwich and some conch fritters..yummy..hubby and I were wishing we could have one yesterday.

Hello there,
Missed this thread earlier - now if you will ask for Phil or Sandy and tell them that Shirley from The Perfect Gift sent you, they are SUPPOSE to give you special rates --20% off - they can call me here at the shop aat 800-950-4559 if there is any problems -
DONT FORGET TO GET YOUR KEY WEST PACKETS - they are really a great help to you while in Key West - also don't forget to remember the Tee shirts shops and your purchases -
Electric cars are very popular in Key West - you can disappear unto streets that are so hidden from the tourist - while there if you want to mingle with the locals you can go to 5 Brothers on the corner of Southard and Grinnell Street - they have awesome cuban sandwiches and bollos (they are fritters and only make in Key West) ----where do you sit you asked? On the curb with the other conchs :D  -------- it is quite an experience. You don't know it until you have tried it.
Luv ya all
Always
Shirley

We rented one with another couple when we were in Key West on our last cruise. It was for a ScavengEAR Hunt and I must say, I have never, never, never laughed so hard in my life. To me it seems the best way to get around and have fun at the same time. The streets are narrow so this is just perfect.

Our only problem is that they are battery powered and ours ran out of umph in the middle of an intersection ... thank God they are so small cause three of us pushed it off the street and used our cell phone to call the company to come get us. Hint ... take their number and your cell phone. Otherwise you should be OK.

"Been there, done that and definitely would do again!"

Interesting thread for me. I have been thinking about renting one for four. Actually it would be two for four people each since we are traveling with my brother and his family.

Shirley, do you think it is a good way to get around with a 5 & 6 year old? I was originally thinking of doing the trolley, but I think the scooter would be convenient and my husband would probably have a ball driving it. Also, what company do you personally recommend?

Thanks.

Traycie,
They are with Key West Cruisers - Now they offered me 20% "cut" of every customer I sent them, but I refused and asked them to give it to the cruisers - Phil's father owns the company but he is also owner of an ol' conch bar on the corner of Grinnell and Truman - it once was called Che Che's bar so I have been thinking about stopping there to speak to him since I do not feel Phil is really giving the discount he said he would - I have only had one response to my questions that if those that I recommend to differrent places in Key West, if they are really getting their discount - the only reasons I want to know this is simply is it worth my trouble or am I doing it for nothing - AN NO I DO NOT GET ANY DISCOUNTS OR KICKBACKS as often thought - yep folks do do somethings just for the kindness of it all.
Anyhow if you do speak to them, let me know Traycie ok and what they tell you.
Thanks a bunch
Always
Shirley

Thanks Shirley, i'll let you know what they';ve offered when i call them, you truly are a gem.
Thanks again.
p,s my envelopes still here ready to post , just need to convert some £ to $ for the postage but it will be with you soon .

Thanks again for all you do. it is much appreciated by me and i'm sure all the Disers.

Traycie :D

Shirley: First I will ask Phil and/or Sandy the price, then I will mention you (that is if we do the scooters instead of the trolley).

Still want to research more regarding if this is the best way for children to travel.

Thank you everyone for your replies.:) I too am still wondering if this is alright for DD 4. If anyone has rented one with a child this young, please let me know.

Thanks.

Cindy

Shirley,
I am not going to KeyWest until January. How long are the coupons good for? When should I send you an envelope for the info? Should I do it now or wait a few months?

Teri

Although the cars have no doors there are seatbelts for children to wear. My 8 yr. old son sat in front with me and used the map to navigate. He got a kick out of helping dad and riding up front.

The scooters are a different story. I don't think they're electric and they don't have seatbelts. They're not that safe for young children, since it requires them to hold or hang on...Mark

Electric cars are very popular in Key West and even tho scooters are everywhere, but I hear more about scooter accidents than the electric cars - if I were to rent anything in Key West, it would be an electric car and the reason being is that it does hold children, it does have seat belts and it is the best way to get children around - the only unfortunalte part about it is that it holds such few people, but then if it held more than 4, you would soon need a bus :D ----traffic, cars, scooters, bikes and mode of transportation is in Key West - traffic is horrendous - parking even worse - the good thing is that you can get away from the hub of all the confusion and discover Key West on your own - you can find back streets - you can go be with the locals - (the real Key West conchs are a trip to be around) - you can see what real Key West is all about and not money hungry tourist rip off places.
Did you know that Key West has an Large underground tunnel? Years and years ago it was built supposely by the pirates for their treasures - and you ask where in the heck could they have a tunnel on a place deep enough and long enough to rate that remark and a city that has a 5' water level - well it is locate at the highest point of Key West which is known as Solares Hill AKA as Angela Street - it is off limits to the public but very few folks know about it - anyhow another small tidbit about Key West.
If I can help further, just give me a call or drop me a note.
Always your buddies
shirley and Norm

Goofynut-
Did the electric car company do the scavenger hunt or was that something your group did on their own? What kinds of things did you have to find? That sounds like a great time but I wouldn't know where to begin with a list!

Thanks for the info
