I have fibromyalgia and CFS I also have a son with Asperger's. My question is can I let him ride on my ECV with me, He is extremly impulsive, this would help a great deal if they can put it on a card. TIA
DLR and WDW prohibit persons under age 18 from using their rental ECVs and limit their rental ECVs to one person only. Some rental companies might not mind but I am not sure on that. Disneyland will not make you take the kid off of your lap if you are double riding unless it is their ECV however it is not safe at all and I would never condone the practice.
Harness and leash is a very good way to control runners. I have seen more kids in harnesses than ever before and they are normal looking kids with no obvious NV problems. The harness does not hurt the kid like a wrist leash. I am so thankful for parents who I see in the park with kids on leashes.
i had a girl about 12 run and stand in front of me at a street show at DCA then run back to her family after the show. Nobody ever stopped her from blocking the view of those behind her. Then she ran past me again to look at the CM actors. I proceeded at medium speed which is about walking speed and was entering the building next to me. The girl again ran in front of me and this time I let go of the rudder of the ECV, swerved hard left and came to a stop. The rudder had popped out of position, I had strained my hand, and nobody cared about that girl.
I am all for harness and leash for kids who cannot be controlled such as runners. I would hate to run over a kid and have not yet. I also can tell you that the ECV is top heavy and the added weight with the second person will make the ECV slow down at a slower rate and make the ECV more prone to tipping.
It is not safe to have a second person ride with you on an ECV.
For that reason, I am sure they would not write something on a GAC saying it was OK.
The rental contracts from all the companies I know of say that there can be only one person on the ECV (no passengers) and the instruction manuals for the ECVs caution against having passengers.
There really isn't space for it and he could hit your hand and cause the ECV to go out of control. An impulsive child could decide to jump off the ECV while it is going, possibly hurting himself.
If you need an ECV and he is impulsive and needs someone to control him, you really need a 2nd person to help him while you ride the ECV.
I do know some people have found that using a stroller even for an older child helps the child to stay in control. It can also sometimes help the person who has difficulty walking/becomes fatigued because it gives something to lean against (even though you have to push it).

Is it actually your ECV? If so, I might be wrong but I don't think they could stop you from letting him ride. But if you're talking about a rental, either from Disney or an outside company, then the answer is no. The rental agreements are usually pretty strict about that.
It is better fo ryou to comment than nobody commenting thus allowing the thread to die unanswered. I posted first then Sue covered those areas I could not answer and verified my information. You then verified that information again so that it is clearly wrong and not allowed except for privately owned ECVs which is still wrong.
For your posting I will give you a dole whip and lots of hugs. This site runs well by lots of people posting and thus helping people. If only 3 people posted it would be so boring.
no offense to the OP, but if he is very impulsive, is it safe to have him with his hands inches away from the controls? I have actually seen a woman hit and my wheelchair has been hit my a people with children on their laps accidentallly hitting or playing with the controls...
in short, it is not safe, and even if it is your own ECV, disney does not HAVE to allow it. the ADA protects people using mobility devices for themselves - it does not require that they allow passengers on a one-passenger mobility device... (little children in big wheelchairs aside - someone else is driving those!)
I would look into getting a harness or see if someone else can go with you to help.
Thank you all for your replys... I do own the ECV and it is a large one we purchased it with the intent to have the room and wait limit for him to ride on it with me. My husband normaly has my 4 yr old DD and I has DS... I can and have held his hand while driving, he us used to that too. I find it hard to manuver through trafic and often get seperated from DH. DS has sensory issues so the harness wont help. I will pray for small crowds so DS can hold my hand while I drive. We will be in the parks 6/28-7/6 has any one traveled these dates, How are the crowds? Thanks again, I do appreciate all your help
You would be going at a busy time; any holiday period is busy and July 4 is right in the middle of your time.
What about having the 4yr old in a stroller and your son hang onto that instead? That would be much safer than having him hold your hand while you are driving.
Depending on your son's size and age, a double stroller might work too, with him sitting with your DD so your DH can cover both of them. You could get a Guest Assistance Card that would allow the stroller to be treated as a wheelchair, so it could be taken in lines (see post #6 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread for more information).
orlandostrollerrentals.com has a double that takes 100 lb total weight. That's what DD9 and DS6 used last trip. It was very comfortable for them and easy to maneuver. We also use the stroller as w/c GAC and are "training" the kids with a child locator device to limit "running"
Problem solved!!! While at a neighborhood garage sale I noticed a big 3 wheel stroller....Because of the above post we purchased it for $20... Now DH will push both kids.. if DS wants to walk it has a strap that wraps around a wrist..(Supposed to keep stroller from rolling away from parent who is running) It will be perfect for DS to stay close.. Thanks for all your help and wisdom..
