I know that the electric "scooters" are available for rental on a "first come, first serve" basis at the parks, but does anyone know if there is ANY WAY at all that they could be "reserved" for the week, to be picked up at the park each day? We don't need to take it out of the park, and renting one from an outside company does not seem like a good idea, since we will have a hard time getting to and from the parks on the buses with one. Is there someone I could call about this? Thanks so much.
There is NO WAY of reserving a Disney scooter for the week. Renting from an outside company however is IMHO a VERY VERY GOOD idea since you will have no problem whatsoever getting it on Disney buses, the monorail and most of the boats. You will NOT have a problem getting to the parks with a scooter.
No way to reserve them for the week except to rent them form an outside provider. What problems in transporting them on Disney transportation. Now if you are staying offsite then that might be a problem but the bus transportation from your hotel should be accessible. If they are using Mears buses then those buses do have lifts and are accessible so inform your hotel that you need accessible transportation and you will be transporting a scooter. It is then their problem to provide accessible transportation according to ADA.
BTW I ran into this not at Disney but at a conference this summer and the charter bus company did accommodate me.
My mother and I just returned from Disneyworld one week ago. I rented a scooter from Randy's Mobility for a week for my mother. They were great to work with. They delivered it to All Star Sports and picked it up the day we left. The buses have lifts on the back to accomadate the scooters. The bus drivers were all very helpful with my mother. Once she got the hang of getting on the lift and into the bus it wasn't a problem. If you are staying on site and using the bus service, I feel the scooters are the way to go. Just the distance between the bus stop and where you would rent a scooter at the parks can be quite a distance in itself. Good luck and enjoy your trip.
I agree with everyone else. IF you are staying on site, it's not a problem. We transport our DD in her wheelchair on the WDW buses. It's not a problem. Most people don't know what to do the first time, but after doing it once, it's not a big problem.

This might help you. My wife is disable and has her own electric scooter (ECV). We are flying from San Antonio to Orlando in Feb 2002. I called the airlines we are booked on and they are going to fly her scooter for free. All I did was ask. They told me they had to have 2 days notice and all we have to do is bring it to the ticket counter and they would box it up for us and put it on the plane. This will save us over $200.00 in rental fees. We are renting a SUV to carry it but we are staying offsite and only doing WDW 4 days out of 7. If you are staying on site and not leaving the property just catch a shuttle to your resort and take Disney's transportation. By the way the airline is Southwest Airlines and on their internet site I purchased 6 one way tickets ( 3 going and 3 returning) for $60.00 a piece. Total of $387.00 for 3 round trips for myself, wife, and son. I also got the rental SUV for $200.00 for 7 days. That was a steal in itself. Her scooter doesn't weigh to much and I can pick it up and put it in the back of the SUV. I am still trying to get discounted tickets for WDW , a 4 day hopper pass. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The airlines do have to fly your scooter or wheelchair for free and it doesn't count as part of your baggage allowance. We always fly with DD's wheelchair because we can't rent anything that will meet her needs. Some people who have their own scooters prefer to rent one in Orlando because then they don't have to worry about damage or anything else on the trip.
For discounted tickets, if you are members of AAA, you might be able to get discounted tickets thru your local AAA office or you can get a AAA discount at the parks. There is also a discount if you are members of the Disney Club (I'm not sure that is the new name; my mind is a blank - it used to be the Magic Kingdom CLub)
