Ebay? Ending an auction early???

sorry, I know this isn't the ebay board, but you guys are so helpful. I'm selling an item that will probably go for $150-175. I've received several requests to end the auction early and also to sell it privately--excluding ebay. I know this is against ebay tos.

I am just so sceptical of everyone right now. I've never ended an auction early. There already a bid of $100 on it right now and I'm thinking if these people really wanted it, BID on it!

Have any of you ever ended an auction early? How do you do this if indeed we want to, and how did it work out for you?

People are already offering $175 plus shipping. What would you do???

I wouldn't end it. I don't know what your item is, but my experience has been that when people want me to end early & sell to them (which I never do) the item goes for more than they are offering. Sure, it is a gamble, but I'd stick out the auction.

It seems to me they want you to end it early because they know a bidding war will drive it up past the $175. I don't think I would do it.

I wouldn't end it. DH had a auction up for a big item that someone offered him a price for it if he ended the auction early.
The person knew, like DH, that it would go for more then what he was offering.

Needless to say it did go for more then what the guy offered him. And to boot the highest bidder lived in the same state as us. So DH didn't have to worry about shipping since were they lived, we were going to be going there anyways to shop.

But like you said, if they want it bad enough, they should bid on it. That is what this guy did after he saw that DH wasn't going to end it early.

I would not end it early.

I did ended one auction early and was very nervous about it. The person wanted it quickly (it was around Thanksgiving) and it wasn't a "special" type of item. We agreed on a price that was in the upper end of what the item typically sold for. Since he and I were both on email at the same time, I told him that I'd go over and add a "buy it now" option to the listing for the price we agreed to and as soon as he saw it he would have to buy it. If someone else beat him to it, too bad. Well, it worked, he got the item, and I got an upper end price for my item.

However, a friend of mine was in a situation more like yours. They were being offered $250 for the item (my friend thought it would be worth around $200). It ended up selling at over $800!!!!

You just never know.

If there are bids on it you really can't end the auction early, not only would it be against ebay rules but very inconsiderate of those bidding.

If you have had multiple requests to end it early (form different people) then my guess is that you will get more then they are offering by just lettting it ride out.

If there are bids on it you can end it early but first you will have to cancel all the current bids. I wouldn't do that. If you leave the auction as is, then you can use ebay's feedback system to post your feedback plus receive feedback for the sale. For me, this is kind of a trust thing. If you cancel the auction, you lose the ability to post feedback relevant to the sale. So for example, if the person chooses not to buy your item you are stuck.
