I saw an interesting blog entry this morning about eBates. It may explain why a lot of people do not get credits from Mypoints, SR, CR etc. when they think that they should:

Today's Chicago Daily Herald reports that Ebates.com's founder and CEO Alessandro Isolani is denying charges that its MoeMoneyMaker software is not an illegal spyware download.

He says, "Spyware is a horrible threat to Internet users, but the problem with this lawsuit it is miscasts our company." He also says that, "All of our pop-ups are clearly labeled," and, "We’re confident that the facts will weigh in our favor."

I don't understand how Isolani's claim that Ebates does not "illegally download spyware" when Ben Edelman's website, in December 2004, captured a video of it being done! Are they going to try to wiggle out of it by saying, "We don't do that ANYMORE"? Or maybe they're going to try to say, "MMM is adware, not spyware"?

In any event, the controversy alone over MoeMoneyMaker should be enough to convince you that if you do have it on your computer, you need to get it off...even if you voluntarily installed it in the first place. But if you need another reason: MMM can interfere with you receiving a rebate through a different rewards program. A tool to remove MMM is located here (click "download removal software).

I do know that you can not use MMM and Mypoints reminders on the smae web site, you need to pick one or the other.

As far as spying, when I installed MSN SPyware thing, it said MMM was spyware, but I left it. As far as I know, I have never had any issued with MMM. I like that if I hit a site that participates in ebates, I get a little pop up from MMM. I like cash more than points and I try to shop only merchants that use ebates.

If ebates knows where I have been , I guess they do. Somehow, it doesn't bother me.
