Hey Crafty.
I dont think we are on any list, can you add us please.
Lynne 37 and DH Leonard Zabek 50:thumbsup2

I sure can. Do you want me to list your hometown, stateroom and dining rotation as well? If so just PM me!

I'm with you Nan-- if this thread sped up like the other one, I'd never keep up!

The speed of that EB Repo cruise thread was the main reason I dropped out of the discussion. It was overwhelming. It turned out that we didn't sail anyway, due to DH's broken leg, but I had dropped out of that thread long before that happened.

I'm hoping this thread keeps it's nice, gentle pace. I'm sure it will get busier as our cruise approaches, but hopefully we'll all be able to keep up!

Hi everyone!

My name is Ed Martin. I was a lucky passenger aboard the August 2008 eastbound Panama Canal repo cruise. It was amazing! But almost as amazing was the lead-up to the cruise itself. It's exciting and there is so much time that it's a blast to talk and plan with fellow-passengers.

I'm a huge fan of the DISBoards. However, when it comes to a "cruise of a lifetime" event like a repo cruise, I found that the single "cruise meet" thread on DIS can be made better with a little bit more.

For the August '08 repo, I created and hosted some private discussion forums to compliment the DIS cruise meet thread. They became known as "The Pirate Zone" as they were built off of a separate web site (of the same name) that had been built for the August repo. They proved to be very popular and very useful for those that sailed.

The DIS cruise meet thread for the August '08 repo ended up being tens of thousands of posts. It was a fantastic community of folks but it was a bit unwieldy for anyone looking to find some info or to ask a quick question.

With the Pirate Zone forums, I set up separate areas for people to talk about a wide variety of topics ranging from transportation to kids activities to separate threads dedicated to each day & port on the cruise. It became a fantastic community and a great supplement & compliment to the cruise meet thread here.

I have gone ahead and created similar dedicated forums for the April 2010 transatlantic repo. I invite all of you to take a look and participate! The site is free to use but in order to participate, like DIS, you need to register. You can feel free to use the same user name there that you use on DIS. It's not a commercial site - no advertising and your registration info will never be shared with anyone. It's just a user-based site to help make the April 2010 planning & passenger community just that much better!

The site is located at www.magic410.com
(as in Disney Magic 4/10 cruise)

Enjoy!

P.S. Thanks to captaincrash for posting a link to the forums in the initial post in this cruise meet thread!!!

Help me out to understand the other site as to me it really looks like another Forum, rather than a website, with tabs and such. A website is very helpful indeed to retain info over the course of many months/year(s).

For that very reason we have a website already created, perhaps you have missed it. I think it is Craftymouse that is heading that up. To be included on it then you need to drop her a pm. (Help me if I got this mixed up, it might have been Tinkerbelle)...

Probably the best way to explain is the experience with the August '08 Panama repo cruise.

The first thing that happened was, obviously, the DIS cruise meet thread. It was very cool but it got very very busy very very fast. To the point that it was tough to keep up with for casual users and over 75,000+ posts, nearly impossible for the uninitiated to drop in and find some info. Next, the Pirate Zone web site came about. It was a great place to post info but it wasn't interactive - meaning it still didn't handle the casual (common) cruiser that is looking to ask a question or to post some tips. As above, the DIS cruise meet thread was heading toward 50,000 posts more than 6 months before the cruise left. So, we supplemented the Pirate Zone web site with Pirate Zone discussion forums. The goal there was to provide multiple threaded discussions about topics of interest regarding the cruise (one of the limitations of the DIS cruise meet thread is that it is one long string). So we had separate discussions dedicated to everything from transportation to kids activities to threads about every day/port on the cruise.

All 3 of these fed off of each other and complimented each other very well. The DIS cruise meet thread was obviously the biggest and most frequented of the 3. But the Pirate Zone web site and forums also proved to be very helpful & popular (including a hundred or so of us that got together on-board for the family photo!). Some people just hung out in the cruise meet thread. Hundreds participated in the Pirate Zone site & forums, too. It was a great community and it allowed people to participate and get info in the ways that they found the most fun & effective.

For the April 2010 repo, the same things have happened. The DIS cruise meet thread opened on "day 1" and is already 53 pages long as I post this. We're still 17 months away from the sail date. That's great but it's also on the same trajectory that the August repo cruise meet thread went - which makes it great for some but unwieldy for many others. Craftymouse has started a web site dedicated to the cruise - much like The Pirate Zone was. Awesome! And I went ahead and put together some discussion forums like I did for the Pirate Zone/August '08 repo.

Each of the 3 have a different purpose. But all of them compliment each other. In the end, the common goal is to have a great time on a great cruise and have a ball sharing as we lead up to it.

If people would rather go with the new website I understand. I'm not really sure why there was any need to create a second one, but it's fine. Just let me know if you'd like to switch and I'll take care of dismantling the Spanish Reposition one.

512 days to go!

Crafty, I like your website and for me the DIS and yours is enough. Can you please add your contact info to it (for silly people like me that think they know it is you but don't remember for sure :rolleyes1 Also, do you think that we could send you pictures of ourselves to add to our names? I found that to be really nice to have an idea of what someone looked like before we meet in so many months.

I don't think our speed is anywhere near what EB repo was we are really more like the WB repo in speed, and we had just one more website and it seemed to work well for us. We totalled slightly over 100 people. My fear with too many choices is that we get disjointed. But of course if others want to participate in multiple sites have at it, its a free world here on the DIS :goodvibes

As for the Shots around the Ship (no wigs) that is my comment, I still have nightmares of Bubba :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Will do!

That should be no problem and it's a great idea. I'll figure out how to add them to the chart.

I agree that the speed on this thread is nothing like it was on the EB PC thread. That thread also started more than a year before the sailing but it moved at a breakneck pace from Day 1. I, honestly, don't see a need for another forum site but agree with you that each person should feel free to participate on either/both as they choose.

As for the Shots around the Ship (no wigs) that is my comment, I still have nightmares of Bubba :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
I am quite sure that I would never make even halfway through "Shots Around the Ship". I am such a lightweight when it comes to drinking! I'd be happy to come along and be your "designated walker" though! ;)

73 weeks from Saturday! ;)

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm glad I was on the WB Repo. We had a nice pace on our DIS thread nothing like what happened on the EB Repo. With that experience I suspect this thread will be much more tame than the EB Repo. We haven't run at break neck speed so far

Okay those are my thoughts, for whatever they are worth.

I think we managed the other thread for the WB pretty well... and for those who couldn't keep up... the info was put on the first page and onto PJ's wonderful site!!!

The best part is if you couldn't keep up...you just had to pop in from time to time and say hello...

I think we stick with what we have - and if you want to wander... go right ahead...

Hello all. I thought I'd pop in to say I'm still around and just quiet.

And I'm still planning a "Shots Around the Ship" event just like I did on the Panama Canal cruise. And then there's also the "Edwardian Tea" to be planned.

You're not off the hook yet...

Think we'll make it to more than 3 bars this time???

Nope... leave it where it is. You've put in alot of work and I don't think this is going to be as busy a thread... there's less people on the cruise as it is.

I'm with you Nan-- if this thread sped up like the other one, I'd never keep up!

I'm not really interested in joining another forum thread, just because I'm so far behind as it is! There's so much going on with the pregnancy and the other kids and work and housekeeping!!!

Mmmm, I missed out on the shots last time because of the pregnancy, but I shouldn't be so encumbered on the next cruise!

Ginamarie.. we'll save you a barstool!!!

Nan... 400 people but who's counting... ok... maybe 100 of us on the thread... It worked...

I think we should take an 8x10 of bubba with us just for old times sake... sort of the Flat Bubba... instead of Flat Stanley... ;)

I'm with you on this one Craftymouse. I like the pace of this thread. And, please don't dismantle the website you started,:scared1:eek: : I like that one too. Just little ol' me puttn' in my two bits.:confused3 I'm sure the other one has it's good point too, but let's don't change a thing.

Thank heavens no wigs :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I know I know not what you meant....ok, Flat Bubba go ahead Michelle I figure we can get him in lots of trouble....

Do you think we have to bail the Flat Bubba out of jail???

Hey... we could blame lots on him... The Plankster will be so relieved... although he will be very lonely with out his BFF :cutie:

Now, should we tell Bubba or should we tell the people here that don't know Bubba. Those are interesting questions....

I agree:thumbsup2 I just haven't had a lot of time to post lately, but I am reading when I can, and look forward to chatting a little more when things quiet down for me!

We also had a separate chat site for the WB Panama Canal for awhile, but few people went to it and it did seem to cause some confusion going to both sites. Eventually, the other site closed down. I can't imagine we will have more DISers on this cruise than the PC ones...it didn't sell out the first day and from what I understand, it probably won't sell out. However, I think that was great of you Ed to set it up. I think what would be helpful is to create an information post within the first post of the thread- listing things like the website, who to contact for fish extenders, about Ians shots around the ship, etc. This all can be put on the website for review as well. Crash, would this be possible since you have that first post? You could also list the other chat site.

Ed, Regarding the chat site, I think maybe part of the confusion is that we are on page 58 or so, several of us have done introductions and chatted, and I think, speaking for myself, was kinda confused as this seemed to come from out of the blue (the other board). I suppose in hindsight it might have been helpful to seek the interest first- as I for one feel bad time was spent to put this together and hate it not to be used.

Anyway, I thought I'd share my two cents in case you are getting the feeling of a push back with introducing the other board...I can't speak for others, but that was just my feelings. I can barely get here, and I like to come here not only to go to this meet thread, but to catch up on old meet threads, and to read other things - such as random threads on whether to wear shorts to dinner or saving seats....those are always entertaining!popcorn:: So this is where I'll come, and I hope you understand.

I think Crafty Mouse did a fine job setting up an information site for us. Between that site and DIS, perhaps anything else would be redundant. Also, all of the info has started to be populated on Crafty Mouse's implementation, so to me it would seem to stick with what works and keep it simple.

Thank heavens no wigs :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I know I know not what you meant....ok, Flat Bubba go ahead Michelle I figure we can get him in lots of trouble....

No wigs, but you WILL be expected at the Edwardian Tea.

Besides, we're going to need someone to be mum and pour out ...

I agree completely with this.
