Eating, eating, and more eating!!--5/30/09-6/7/09--Updated 6/11--Whispering Canyon

Wolfgang Puck Express

Let the food porn begin!

After arriving and checking in, my darling wife, our niece, and I headed off to Downtown Disney for dinner. Tonight's menu: WP Express. We had been here twice before on previous trips, and were excited to try it again, because we knew that there were good eats to be had there.

We arrived at the restaurant, and there was no line! Woo hoo! This was our first time on the meal plan, so we stated that right away, and were told that we could choose an entree item, a dessert, and a drink. Unfortunately, they were out of the creme brulee that night, but hey, we had it later in the week!

My wife ordered first. She ordered the rotisserie beef and gorgonzola pocket with fresh potato chips. This pocket featured (according to All Ears) Niman ranch rotisserie beef, gorgonzola, red onions, chopped romaine, roma tomatoes, and horseradish caesar dressing. According to my wife, she thought that this was fantastic. The flavor was great, and you really could taste the gorgonzola and horseradish...and amazingly, these flavors melded together quite well. There was a bit of a salad quality to it, and the portion was HUGE! Not to mention the chips. They were salty, flavorful, and we wish we could've taken some of them home. How can our words do this justice? Here's the pic:

I ordered the meatball and parmesan pizza. To quote Rachel Ray, Yummo! This tasty pizza featured meatballs, a fresh basil pesto, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, tomato basil garlic sauce, and fresh basil on top. Here's what I loved about this pizza: first, loved the fresh basil. Gave it a really good flavor. There's nothing like fresh ingredients. Second, it was like eating two separate pizzas at the same time. The first few bites seemed to have more of the meatballs and mozzarella, and towards the crust was more pesto. For me, this was a definite repeater.

Our niece had a side of the macaroni and cheese. Specifically, the four cheese macaroni. Couldn't tell you what cheeses were in there, but we did happen to steal a few bites, and it was tasty. Cheese and pasta. What's better than that? Ok, it was a little overcooked, but it was rich and yummy. Comfort food.

After placing our order and getting our drinks, we sat at a table outside where we were entertained by a little squirrel that we have dubbed Pete. Of course, Pete and his friends frequent the World (as we all know) but Pete was particularly adventuresome as he really let you know that he wanted some of your food. I swear, he was more tame than our dogs at home!

For dessert, we both ordered the brownies. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, they were out of creme brulee. The brownies were described as "fresh baked" on All Ears, and unfortunately, this was the only part of the meal that wasn't above par. Obviously packaged brownies, they were still good (chocolate!), but nothing special. So much so, that we forgot to take a picture of them.....

So here's our overall review:

We would definitely return! (And we did!)

Atmosphere: 3 forks.
The place was clean, pleasant and had outdoor seating. However, the outdoor seating is right next to an area where people smoke. So that took away from the pleasantness.

Quality of food: 3 1/2 forks

This was a close one to be a 4 forks, but the brownie brought it down a notch. Better brownies are to be had at home.

Service: 3 forks.
No problems here. The lemonade was refilled and the food was hot. And our waiter was personable.

What's next? Whispering Canyon breakfast! Stay tuned!

And to finish, here's a picture of day 1 towel art:

So far so good at Wolfgang! The pizza does look really good and if I liked gorgonzola, I'd be in heaven with the pocket! Great start :)

We always go to Earl of Sandwich in DTD but that rotisserie beef sandwich seriously has me thinking of WPE! Wow, that looks good. We'll only make it to DTD once next trip ... I have to decide whether to stick with our ole standby or trying something new! Yum!

Oh, wow this looks great! We're planning on trying WPE for the first time, and this helps to cement that in our plans! :]

Can't wait to see the rest.......... please tell me you have pics of the hot dogs from Casey's?! I'm dying to see one!!!!! :rotfl:

I love WPE...so sorry we missed it on our trip the other day but hope to squeeze it in the next time....your pizza looks awesome!

subbing... love it! Great pictures! That sandwich with the horseradish caesar dressing is making my mouth water!

Great first review! Thanks for the picture of the pocket! I never really knew what those would look like, but they look delicious!! :goodvibes

:cheer2:

Great review so far!!!!

Looking forward to more!

Thank so much for sharing!

Im locked up and ready for your report! WGP is very very good and a great value when trying to stretch the dinning plan for max value. We look forward to going again this coming September.

I had the beef and gorgonzola pocket last year and LOVED it. That was our first time at WPE, won't be our last!:thumbsup2 Great start!!!!!

Whispering Canyon-Breakfast

Ah, it was time for our first full day at the most magical place on earth. We make it a point to go to Whispering Canyon for breakfast on every trip, because, well, we love love love Wilderness Lodge--and we haven't stayed anywhere other than there!

We have some fond memories of the Whispering Canyon. On our honeymoon, we went there for breakfast on the first morning, and the cast members made us stand up and dance as they sang "Going to the Chapel." So embarrassing, and yet so fun! So, we love the antics that are Whispering Canyon, and like the hearty breakfast as well.

So, in our attempt (and we did great!) to be good early risers, we had a 7:30 AM reservation for WC. And we were the first ones there. The place was dead. You could hear a pin drop! Our server did his best to be in character and full of energy, but without any other patrons in the room, it was pretty hard to do so. But, we're not sure that he was fully awake and ready for the day yet (but who is at 7:30??)

We all ordered the skillet for breakfast. The breakfast skillet is all you can eat scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, biscuits/gravy, sausage, waffles, and bacon.

Ok, let me complain about Disney bacon for a moment. It's not good. It's thin, dried out, and tastes like Hormel microwave bacon. This was true at every breakfast that we had over the course of the week. Disney should go with thicker cut bacon---and not "deli sliced" bacon. =)

The food itself was solid (per husband). The wife said it was "ok." It wasn't great, it wasn't bad, but it was filling. There wasn't really anything that stuck out as unique, but who doesn't like a Mickey waffle? It is fun to have it served family style, and with kids, Whispering Canyon is a really fun place to go.. just make sure to make a later ADR, so that you have some activity.

We will always return to Whispering Canyon. No, it's not the greatest food, but it has great memories for us, and usually, it's a very fun place to go. Maybe we'll try it for dinner next time!

Atmosphere: 2 forks
Too early of an ADR! Every other time we've gone, we would give it a 3 1/2

Quality of food: 2 forks

Service: 3 forks
Our server was attentive, he asked us what park we were going to and then brought us a map, announced our brother/sister in law's honeymoon, and gave stickers to our niece.

We also wanted to show everyone the cake that we ordered for our anniversary! It was a 10" vanilla cake, with milk chocolate mousse between the layers, covered in chocolate ganache and chocolate shavings. It was WONDERFUL! I just wish we could've eaten more of it! It was delivered to our room mid-day on day 1, and we all nibbled on it throughout the week. (Yay refrigerator!) And when we left a week later, there was still half of the cake left. We ordered it through Wilderness Lodge bakery prior to arriving, and the process couldn't have been easier. I think it cost around 50.00.

What's next? Rose and Crown for dinner. Stay tuned!

Sorry for the delay in more reviews, its the weekend ya know? Tonight we should have a review on Rose and Crown in Epcot.

Nice review of Whispering Canyon..haven't tried it yet because we are always too lazy to trek over there. I have to be a minority though and say I LOVE Disney bacon. I love crispy burnt bacon and i find thin bacon is the only type that gets crispy enough for me. I like to cook my bacon in a microwave at home instead of a skillet just to get it that way. :) Everyone else I talk to though loves the 'normal' way!
